Favorite Piece of 80's Clothing

The cutting-edge styles, the bright colors, the Ray Bans. An era where it was ok for men to wear pink and for women to wear black netting as shirts.

What was your favorite clothing item in the 1980's?

Mine was my Miami Vice style gray checkered sportcoat that I wore to homecoming 1987. 6 yrs after that, I was going through my wardrobe to toss/donate items and I found $80 in one of the pockets.

While I was happy as could be with the find, I almost wanted to cry thinking of all the times I could have really used that money in college. The 5 day stretches of living off of Ramen noodles, the car needing a battery which I couldn't afford for a couple of weeks...

I love this topic JD!  My favorite thing to wear was the mini skirt.  I had a lot of them.  My favorite was actually one that my mother made for me.  It was light pink and was knit.  It had a matching sweater and it hugged every curve.  It was one of those outfits that when you went out in it, you knew you were going to be noticed.  I loved that feeling!  Still do!

It sounds to me like Trish was one of those girls that made high school bearable for us guys

I always appreciated the effort of the girls that came to school and provided something more interesting to look at than the bald back of Mr. Avery's head as he scribbled away accounting information on the blackboard

As for MY favorite piece of clothing, I never got too into the fashion of the 80's, but my favorite piece of clothing was and still is the shades, you gotta have cool shades.  It's almost like putting a mask on, you feel like you're just a little bit hidden, just enough to skate by un-noticed when you want to!

And of COURSE it HAD to be Ray-Bans!  Because that's what John & Danny wore (from SNL of course).

However, I had ZERO money as a teenager, so I was left with those cheapo $1.00 a pair knock-offs of Ray-Bans

About three years ago I finally treated myself to not one but TWO REAL pairs of the classic Ray-Bans and I can definately say they were worth every penny!  WOO HOO!

Jeremy help me with this one, I had a pair of them sunglasses that this actor named Andrew McCarthy made famous, along with the resergence of the trench coat in the 1980s. I think the movie was Less Than Zero (a terrible take on a great book). What were them shades called. They were tortoise, were they Wayfarers? help anyone?

Riggs! maybe we should have a picture section on the site for ladies in miniskirts! they could hold up a signs that say "I LOVE FREEZE FRAME RADIO"! It sounds like we might have 2 potential volenteers thus far!

LOL,

I think you may be wrong in your assumption that they'd be interested in that J.D.

HOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER,

If you REALLY want to convince them they should, you probably could do it by offering to put a photo of YOURSELF up on the site wearing a mini-skirt first!  Now THAT would truly be leading by example!

Man, I gotta get this image outta my head now!

Ahem,

I DO NOT own any mini-skirts Mr. Jazz Doctor! (You know I gave up cross-dressing when they stopped showing Rocky Horror Picture Show at the paradise!)

However, I'm sure we could find one at the local Goodwill that you could wear for the pictoral.

You know, in fact, talking about how to get some local press coverage for the station, what if you were to spend saturday afternoon walking around wisonsin avenue in a mini-skirt handing out Freeze Frame Radio flyers?  I BET THAT WOULD GET SOME ATTENTION!

And hey, I'm willing to be fair about this, I realize I should have to participate in some manner in this advertising plan, so I'll tell you what, I'll foot the bill for the flyers.

Sound like a deal?

Sorry, JD, forgot to mention that I would listen to Jazz 101 on Sunday from 8-10 pm CST on the internet in my hotel while I was there.    Does THAT make it better?

Hey gang!

I was watching VH-1 Classics Thanksgiving Dinner tonight, which was by the way excellent.  Terri Nunn of Berlin was there, with Eddie Money, MC Hammer, Lisa Lisa, Davey Jones & Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister, just sitting around eating and talking for an hour.

But anyway, for some reason a thought hit me.

When we talked about this topic, we seem to have overlooked probably the DEFINITIVE peice of 80's clothing, or atleast 80's accessories.

WHAT ABOUT THE SWATCH?!?!?   Man O man those things were the RAGE!  Did anyone own one?  Did anyone own several?  What was your favorite & why?  What about the interchangeable swatch guards?

I can't beleive I had forgotten about those things!

The big thing at our school was to see how many you could wear at once.  You didn't actually own them.  You would try and cajole the guys to let you wear theirs.  I think my record was 6.  It takes a lot of flirting to get 6 swatches.

I think they are still made/ distributed by Swiss now. I think I saw this show once where there was some little store in France that sold a lot of the classic ones from the 80s like for as high as $700.

I never actually owned one.  I wore a lot of them, but never actually bought one.

another cool piece of clothing I had were my boater shoes! they looked like the shoes mr rogers put on when he started the show! I must brag that I started that trend in our high school! those and the button down sweaters and you were the epitomy of the sensitve 80's male. (p.s. I have often said if the jd of today could revisit the jd of the 80's, he'd want to kick that kid in the butt!)

The big shoe fad at our school was docksiders or topsiders.  You know, the leather shoe that kind of looked liked penny loafers.  Of course, you weren't cool unless you wore them without socks.  I went to Berlin with Girl Scouts in the winter time and wore those with no socks.  Not a good thing.
