The really great news is that both Pambo and I will be fine throught this round of layoffs at our job. 5000 people company wide sometime this quarter, unfortunately will not be. I'm even more pleased to announce that Pambo will no longer be working for the obnoxious bosshole she has been beset with for the last 2 years or so. There just are not words to express how happy I am that Pambo will no longer have to suffer that woman.
On the medical front, she is now seeing a new doctor at KU Medical Center. They are starting a new round of MRIs and such to try to once and for all determine the cause of her nerve pain. The not so encouraging news is that the doctor at this point seems to believe that this is the result of some kind of virus which is apparently related to the herpes virus that causes cold sores and the like. Dr. says that is why she had such a terrible reaction to the nerve compression surgery. The trauma from that apparently agitated the virus which caused the massive cold sore she had.
All this time we have been assuming that as a last resort, Pambo could consider having her Trigeminal Nerve severed which in theory should be a permanent end to the pain. This Dr. now says that if this is in fact viral, that would be a really bad idea. Additional surgery so close to her eye would likely cause another viral outbreak which could possibly attack her optic nerve and cause blindness. If this does happen to be viral, there is not a lot that can be done other than try to manage the pain through medication.
Please keep Pambo in your thoughts and prayers.

Will do! I wasn't so worried about me in this round. My Director (boss's boss) is somewhat of a friend of mine. He clued me in weeks ago that no one in my work group had anything to worry on. I truly didn't suspect that we did given that the area I work in was not one of the targeted divisions. I'm fortunate enough to be working in the area that is the future of the company.
Pambo was working in one of the targeted areas (the old long distance platform). She has been moved over to the much safer wireless network. Still, I'm trying to cut her a better deal and get her moved over on the IP side of the business with me. My boss (Ken, great guy) is really helping out. Our management team is trying to get some job openings approved. Hopefully that will happen soon. Ken has been giving Pambo some shining recommendations toward getting one of the potential jobs.

The latest: Pambo went in on Thursday for another series of MRIs. Since she is horribly claustrophobic and it was necessary to have her lay face down in an enclosed MRI unit, they knocked her out for that one.
She came by the office to talk to me for a little bit on Friday and didn't have much to say on that experience other than she was still groggy a little. She has also been back to the neurologist she's been seeing for some time now. He decided to give her a different pain medication which is supposed to be somewhat stronger than what she has been taking. Given this, he also ordered her to take 2 weeks of short term disability from work to give her a chance to adjust to the meds, get the MRI results back, and see what else the other doctor wants to do with her situation. I think the theory they are working on is if maybe they can get the pain to settle down it will say settled down.

I hate seeing this happen to her. This is one of those conditions that is hard to diagnose and next to impossible to fix, at least that is how it seems. I have some experience with random nerve pains from when I was recovering from my car accident. I can't imagine what it would be like to have something even remotely like that going on in my head all the time.
