Hiccups for 3 weeks now?!?!

Just read this, I feel bad for this poor girl.  Can you imagine?

Fla. teen hiccuping for over 3 weeks

Wed Feb 14, 8:44 PM ET

Jennifer Mee can't stop hiccuping. For more than three weeks now, the 15-year-old St. Petersburg teen has hiccuped close to 50 times a minute — despite the best efforts of doctors and home remedies.

She's had blood tests, a CT scan and an MRI. Drugs haven't worked. Neither has holding her breath, putting sugar under her tongue, sipping pickle juice, breathing into a paper bag and drinking out of the wrong side of a glass.

And, yes, people have tried to scare them out of her.

The hiccups do stop when she's sleeping.

According to the National Institutes of Health, hiccups are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, which causes vocal cords to briefly close, which makes that distinctive hiccup sound. They can start for no reason or be triggered by anything from spicy foods to stress.

It is not clear what triggered Jennifer's hiccups, which started in school Jan. 23. Her mother, Rachel Robidoux, recently turned to the local newspaper for help.

"I'm just looking for some answers where somebody's gone through this," Robidoux told the St. Petersburg Times. "At this point, we're willing to do anything."

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) -- She sipped pickle juice, held her breath, breathed into a bag, even went to a neurologist, but for more than five weeks nothing would stop a 15-year-old girl's rapid hiccups -- until they finally just stopped on their own.

After trying countless remedies and attracting national media attention, Jennifer Mee said her hiccups suddenly stopped around 5 p.m. Wednesday. No one is certain why.

"Right now, my nose is burning and my throat hurts," she told the St. Petersburg Times, but she said she felt a lot better than she has in weeks. (Watch Jennifer Mee hiccup Video)

Jennifer had started hiccupping January 23 close to 50 times a minute and said it only stopped when she was sleeping.

She saw an infectious disease specialist, a neurologist, a chiropractor, a hypnotist and an acupuncturist. She tried a patented device that is designed to stop hiccups, plus all the old remedies. Her mother called the media two weeks ago to try to find more help for her daughter, who ended up on NBC's "Today" show.

According to the National Institutes of Health, hiccups can be triggered by anything from spicy foods to stress, and they can start for no reason at all.

They're caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, which causes the vocal cords to close briefly, making that distinctive sound.

Now that it's stopped can you imagine how worried she's going to be everytime she has just a normal case of the hiccups?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
A Florida woman said she feels like a freak show because of her unexplained condition -- a case of the never-ending hiccups, according to a report.A 15-year-old St. Petersburg girl, Jennifer Mee, said she started hiccupping last month, hiccupping close to 50 times a minute. The hiccups finally stopped for Mee after more than five weeks of spasms. Now, as strange as it seems, WJXT-TV found out the teen is not alone in her hiccups. Jacksonville's Jaime Molisee said she's tried everything but hasn't been able to stop hiccupping for eight months.  "They come on just the spur of the moment," Molisee said. She said in June 2006 she started hiccupping and that over time the hiccups have gotten progressively worse."This is very loud. It used to be just regular hiccups," Molisee said. Her hiccups are currently anything but regular, sounding like an abrupt scream. The hiccups are so loud they can be heard from outside of Molisee's door.Molisee said she's practically a shut-in as a result of her incessant hiccupping and how people react to her in public."I could hear people in next aisle laughing at me. When I went over, they continued to laugh. It's like I wasn't human anymore," Molisee said.Hiccupping is not her only problem. She said her right arm shakes, and that doctors think the two could be related.Molisee is out of work, collecting disability and hoping doctors can find a cure, WJXT-TV reported."Until you've watched a loved one go through any type of disability, you won't understand the true meaning of it," she said.Molisee said she has seen eight doctors about her problem, but no one has been able to diagnose what is causing the constant hiccups."I am seeing a neurologist and he's doing as many studies as he can. He has gone into the fact that there is a surgery they can do in regards to stimulating the nerves that he hopes may help, but he wants to rule out everything else," Molisee said.

My dad has been plagued by this off and on for about 5 or so years.  They come for a few days or weeks or months then go away for a while.  It's now been a couple of years since he's had them but no one could figure out why it was happpening.

My cure for hiccups requires a watch, and has worked for everyone I have ever tried it on. You have the person watch the second hand and count every hiccup and how many they have, eventually it gets further and further apart and they quit. My Grandma taught me that trick and it works!

I'll have to remember that.

Those grandma's remedies are tried and true.  Smart old gals.
