Family Ties is in hand, FINALLY!

I was sooooooooooo jazzed to get season one of Family Ties, I get home from Target, empty the bags, and it's not in there!

The checker failed to give me one of my four bags

After driving all the way back, getting the bag, I open Family Ties to find out it's pretty much the cheapest looking DVD Season I own.  No bonus stuff, no real graphics.  Even the DVD's themselves are very plain silver & gray.

But that's ok.  If they can produce em' cheap enough maybe they won't need big-time sales to justify putting the rest of the series out.

Ok, bye now.  I have 22 half hours of television to watch, and then rewatch, and then rewatch again...

I picked my copy up at Target too. To be honest, I actually like the packaging because it's a nice shelf-saver when you have as many DVD's as I do. I hope we at least get season 2 this year. I'm not a big fan of the latter seasons but at least I'd like it up through s4

Ugh.  I'm a "completist".  Generally if they don't complete a series on DVD I just sell it off.  I'm not interested in having 5/7'ths of any shows run.

Of course, this is probably the ONE exception.  But if they stop issuing them I'll buy the Asian Bootlegs.  Those have been available for years but I waited and waited for the official release of the show.

If they decide they don't want my money then I'll go the other route.

I'll pick up the entire run if it comes out, but it's mostly the pre-Brian Bonsall years I mostly want to own. I'll usually keep a show in hopes we'll see another season, since Mad About You just proved that you can never say never. There are shows like Charmed (I stopped with season 4) and Moonlighting (tho I suppose I may as well get the last season of Moonlighting for completions sake) where I stopped at already, and I already know when we see more Melrose Place out, I am finished after 90% of the cast leaves at the end of season 5, but I do try to complete the shows I buy unless there's a huge drop in quality (like the way Charmed's executive producer bailed after season 4 and the show became crap in season 5) or something like that to steer me away.

However, in this day and age, you never know with tv shows. Happy Days and Laverne And Shirley season 1 came out in August 2004, and yet we're seeing season 2 of those coming out in April, 2 and 2/3 years later (I heard the delay was because Paramount wanted to take care of all musical clearance on both shows before . So for most shows, it's not a case of if, but when. I do hope we at least have news about season 2 in the next six to eight months.

Anyone else find the first season weird to watch seeing a beardless Michael Gross? The beard was so defining to the character of Steven that seeing him cleanshaven is funny, even tho Gross actually ditched the beard ages ago in real life.

watching the first five episodes, two things dawned on me.

1. a lot of people point out how dated the series is because of the obvious influence of President Reagan, but I disagree. Considering the state of the nation and the war and the fact that it seems like the left and the right seem to hate each others guts, I think the show couldn't possibly be more relevant today considering the cold war between Democrats and Republicans. I think more people should watch Family Ties today for that reason because it tries to provide a voice of moderation between the two.

2. it gets a little depressing these days watching Michael J. Fox on here so young and full of life considering how bad his Parkinsons has gotten these days. I'm a little worried he won't be around too much longer and it's a shame because I always enjoyed his acting.

I've only watched three episodes so far, but the thing that has stuck with me is how each show has such a specific moral to it.  The early shows almost come off a bit preachy.

What I LIKE about TV from the 80's is that it did teach children good lessons while still being funny, but the first three episodes here laid it on a bit thick.

I read the Entertainment Weekly review that MzHartz brought up and they said the shows each had the feel of an ABC Afterschool special.  I think that hit's the nail on the head.

None of this deters me, I love the show and I think I've probably never seen most of the first season in it's entirety (I've seen the shortened rerun versions), so I'm enjoying these.

I know that the show gets MUCH better and much more subtle in it's story-telling later on, so I'm just looking forward to future seasons.

You're right Anf, it is hard to watch MJF so young and pre-illness.  I couldn't help but think while watching it how at that time the future seemed so bright and he had no idea in a decade or so he'd start falling ill.  Makes you always think about your own life in a slightly different way.

actually, after revisiting Facts Of Life season 3 on DVD (the season where Natalie is almost raped, 12 year old Tootie gets drunk, Jo causes a teacher to be fired by making up drug use, etc.. in the span of about four episodes), Family Ties doesn't feel the least bit preachy.

Interested tidbit: Steven Keaton, Roseanne and George Costanza (well, on the season 4 DVD only, they refilmed the episode for syndication after Jerry Stiller became established in the role, though both versions are on the DVD) all share the same TV dad. Imagine the crossover potentials if Roseanne or George would've found out who they're related to, LOL

Hey Anfman,

Have you noticed what a HUGE part the character of Jennifer played that first season as far as being a source of laughs?  I didn't remember that at all.  I bet she is used for 1/3'rd of all the punchlines duing the fist ten episodes.

So far I've gotten though I think 11 episodes, and I'm already worried about having to wait for season two   I'm TRYING to pace myself and only watch 2 episodes a night.
