I'll start with the before. I posted this following picture last winter after our big strom. You may remember it:
That is the South side of our downtown "City Square".
Tonight, it looks like this:
Wouldn't you know it, the ONE STINKING TIME I didn't have my backpack with me in the van which I would have had my "real" camera with me, something like this happens. So, this is as good as I could get with my camera phone.
It started in the camera store. I had to go to the church to start moving all the equipment into the new sound booth and they were fighting it then. At that time, the smoke was only coming out of the camera store. I stopped again when I came home.
There is a fire wall between the "Chapins" (furniture store) building and the rest. When I left, the fire had not gotten through the fire wall YET, but I will be very surprised if it holds.
That entire block is gone, from right to left, it is a furniture store on the West end, an appliance store, an insurance agent, a camera store, and a clothing store on the East End. Even if they "save" the furniture store, the smoke and heat damage still has to be intense.
I took those pictures a block away across the park and I could feel the heat on my face from there.
Its a sad day here.
The only good thing is that they are "just" businesses . . . so no one probably got hurt.
We had a fire near here recently in a brick building, I was amazed how the brick held up but everything inside was devoured.
Afterward, once they boarded up the windows you couldn't even tell there was a fire, it looked like the place had just been boarded up and abandoned. I wonder if it will be similar by you.
wow! HOLY COW!!! what a shame!! if for anything, just that that whole structure has that old built in america when america had brick and steel and pride. very sad that way...

It USED to be living area above the businesses, but not any more. The furniture store has display upstairs. The rest are just empty or the businesses were using them for storage . . . thankfully no one is living up there any more.
I was wondering because the windows over the closer stores seem to be boarded or have some kind of permanent cover over them, but the ones further away look like regular sliding windows.
I went back and got some better pictures and some video. The fire wall didn't hold . . . the furniture store is gutted now too. While I was there, the fire got to the basement of the appliance store. The owner is a big hunter and had a bunch of guns and ammunition down there. It sounded like firecrackers going off for a few minutes once the fire got to the shells.
I'm going to go take a shower. I'll probably post more pics and maybe a video tomorrow.
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one Drying in the colour of the evening sun Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant To clinch a lifetime's argument That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could For all those born beneath an angry star Lest we forget how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star, like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are, how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall Like tears from a star, like tears from a star On and on the rain will say How fragile we are, how fragile we are How fragile we are, how fragile we are

Its always so sad to lose the history like that. We have has several fires in historical buildings in this area and things do recover but they are never the same.
Yes, they were pretty worn out by that time. Also, at this point, there was nothing to save so the excitement was pretty much over and they were just keeping it contained.
One more before I go to bed. Here's one of the better stills I got. I think it came out good for a night time shot at about 3/4 zoom from a block away.
School is canceled for today. Traffic is being routed past one of the elementary schools and we are being asked to avoid using as much water as possible to help preserve the pressure for the firefighters that are still working.
The boy and I will probably walk down there after while.
And here's the after. The boy and I just walked down town and took some more pics. We had a nice long talk about fire and just what can happen when fire gets out of control and why we don't play with it.
Here's a shot from the same spot as the winter pic:
And a couple more:
The word is that a demolotion crew will be coming in soon to finish tearing it down. The brick walls are not safe to leave like that so it will come down before the street (State highway #2) can be opened back up. It is going to be so weird to have that side of the "Square" leveled.
man I don't know, it doesn't looked like they are getting smoked out, but can you just imagine the toxins burining on that large of a scale....I think of the lung problems a lot of the 9-11 firemen are having...

That smoke can't be good for them. When the camera store was burning the smoke color would change as the different chemicals were burning.
This building was one of five that are on the historical records here. That building was built in 1889.
My wife went to check on her mom tonight and drove down around there to see what was going in. She said there is now a big wrecking crane parked down town tonight ready to start knocking it the rest of the way down.
