Amanda Beard - OK or NOT?

Amanda Beard makes quick change from swim suit to birthday suit
By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - The last time the world looked at Amanda Beard she was winning her first individual Olympic gold medal at the Athens Games.
Theres a lot more of the 25-year-old swimmer on view in the July issue of Playboy, where a topless Beard is on the cover billed as "the worlds sexiest athlete nude."
Inside, she takes off her clothes in eight pictures certain to create a stir among rivals and young girls who consider her a role model.
Beard is unapologetic about what she calls her latest "outside adventure." After all, shes modeled in mens magazines before, notably a spread in FHM that left little to the imagination.
"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I really felt excited and motivated to do it," she told The Associated Press on Thursday, sipping coffee in the sunny backyard of her Venice home.
"Im kind of used to people not necessarily agreeing with everything that I do and thats totally fine. This doesnt change my personality or who I am. Its just a business decision, a career decision."
Beard, who previously dated NASCAR driver Carl Edwards, posed in the prime of her career. Shes aiming to qualify for her fourth Olympics next year in Beijing, and is the Olympic champion and former world-record holder in the 200-meter breaststroke.
It may be months before Beard is competing in meets and can gauge the reaction of her fellow swimmers to her magazine spread. She wont begin serious training for the Olympics until later this year, when she plans to give up riding motorcycles, snowboarding and vacations.
"It would only feel awkward if they make comments to me about it," she said. "Well see how that one goes."
Beard first came to attention at the 1996 Games, where as a scrawny 14-year-old she toted her teddy bear to the starting blocks and won two silver medals. She medaled at the 2000 Games, too.
"Theres a lot of debate about whether it demeans women and female athletes," said Dave Salo, Beards coach at Trojan Swim Club. "If nothing else, it celebrates the athleticism and takes away from the model-type women."
Beard is aware of the criticism she could get from the mothers of young swimmers and girls. But she points out those are some of the same people who had her autograph FHM when she was in that magazine.
"Ive had so many women approach me and say, We love seeing a good, healthy body being portrayed as beauty," she said. "Im healthy. I work out like crazy. Im not one of those people thats partying wee into the hours. This, I think, is a better role model than most."

I voted yes. She works hard to have a nice body, and deserves the right to show it off. If someone doesn't wanna see it, they shouldn't buy the magazine - that's my theory.

Besides, I think it's very refreshing to see real (.)(.) for once. (Not to mention the fact that she has great hair!) smile.gif

I voted no, because I don't think she should have posed. Certainly she has the right too, and surprise, surprise, for a nice little pile of cash she exercised that right.

I'd prefer Olympic heroes show some class and try to avoid the soft-core pornography if they can.

Definately has a great body, but she's 100 times sexier in the speedo ad than she is on the cover of Playboy. People with great bodies don't need to be completely naked to show it.

Personally, I prefer to leave just a little to my imagination.

So I guess you will NOT be buying the issue then, JR?

Well, maybe for that article on Danica Patrick.  You know, they have GREAT articles in Playboy. wink.gif

Actually, in all seriousness, no I wouldn't.  I went through a phase in my 20's when I was a subscriber to playboy, but in general I find it distasteful.  I really do.

More than a few of my favorite actresses have appeared in it and it forever changed the way I think of them.  I just personally find it distasteful.

There's nothing wrong with the human body, and the female human body is truly God's finest work, but I just believe only a select few should see it in it's full glory.

I don't think it's good to print it out and sell it for $4.95 a shot to any sad sack that has the cash.

Again, all of this is just my opinion.  There's nothing wrong with showing some humility in this world, even if you are insanely georgeous.

And in all honesty, the articles and interviews (not the Playmates' - you know what I mean!) in Playboy really are excellent.

Yeah, you're right.

It's the standard joke, but they really do (or did I should say, as I'd have no knowledge anymore) have some excellent writers, particularly sports writers.

How old is she now? She looks a lot older now than she did back when she was in the Olympics.... I think she looks tired or just isn't aging well.

I actually have to agree with JR on this one. The Speedo shot is totally sexier, and she doesn't look very comfortable in the Playboy picture. To me, posing in Playboy is a lot like selling out, a lot moreso than doing Speedo commercials or ads.

Did she have cosmetic work done? It looks like it - the face doesn't look anything like her, although it could be a mix of bad maekup and bad airbrushing...she looks 10 years older than she is, and to JD's point, a bit more masculine than she probably would like.

I've looked at this poll a couple times and had such a lack of interest in her that I really couldn't vote. Like all people, her choices are part of the cycle of cause and effect...hopefully she's cool with being objectified, because that is what our social order deems fitting to happen when you pose nude. Hopefully she's proud enough and liberal enough with her views on the human body that she will one day face her relatives, maybe even her kids, and not feel any shame or regret for posing...it will certainly resurface someday. I'm not saying she should feel that way, I'm just saying it is a common symptom of such a situation. In all, she's not the first and certainly won't be the last celebrity to bare it all. yawn

i agree that she has a fantastic body.  and i agree that she has the right to pose nude.  we are fortunate to live in a country where we we have freedom of choice.  i don't think that was the right direction for her to go with it and still be a positive role model for young women.  maybe i am just old, but i don't think that when you go there you should be suprised when there's nowhere else to go...  know what i mean?  now there's nothing left to see...  who cares?

well, maybe the greasy, sweaty guy who works at the glass plant across the street from the convenience store which he stops by to pick up his daily quart of colt 45 and playboy because he's had a hard day at work and just wants to go home and relax.... yeah, we know he cares...

yeah, i'd like to know that i look hot in playboy and THAT is at home adoring me all over the pages!  toilet.gif

i don't think she really thought things through, but like heather said  -- yawn

I think the most disturbing thing to me is that she justifies it as a "business decision".

I don't like that attitude at all.  I can understand it if you're an actress and have to decide if you want to do a nude scene in a movie because it's integral to the role.  But an Olympic athlete needs to do a full nude layout as a business decision?

She still feels she's a role model, what exactly is the message she's sending young women?  Yes, you can excel at your athletic endeavors, but there's more money to be made by dropping your clothes for a nudie mag?

Again though, I'm not questioning her right to do it.  Just basically answering the initial question of the thread.  No.  I don't think she should have done it.

I'm sure a whooooooooooooole buncha men out there strongly disagree with me. smile

I guess I just do not get it- why would men not agree with you? Is looking at any woman's naked body that great? I know men are visually stimulated- but do you have to look at everyone that way? Seen one seen em all- in my opinion! .I guess my minds does not work that way. It would be like being on a diet, but having pictures of fattening food everywhere. I was trying to explain that to my kids last weekend. Your body should be something you share with your spouse- not the world. It makes it a bit more special that way.

I also think our society sends such horrible messages sometimes and like I have said before- what we place monetary value on is sad. I wish my Sunday school teacher could make that kinda money- she might actually do something good with it.

These girls make this money- but to what good?

Hey Ruby, here's some more interesting information to consider. The primary appeal of nudie mags is one of sexual fantasy, right? Given that, I wonder how the stats roll into contributing to their mainstream popularity and level of social acceptance. Here's the stats from the old Kinsey Reports, still considered valued data on American sexuality today:

Fantasy

Men's sexual fantasies tend to be more sexually explicit than women's; women's fantasies tend to be more emotional and romantic (Zurbriggen & Yost, 2004).

In one study, men's fantasies mentioned a partner's sexual desire and pleasure more frequently than did women's fantasies (Zurbriggen & Yost, 2004).

54% of men think about sex everyday or several times a day, 43% a few times per month or a few times per week, and 4% less than once a month (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels, 1994).

19% of women think about sex everyday or several times a day, 67% a few times per month or a few times per week, and 14% less than once a month (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, Michaels, 1994).

I think that those numbers are probably higher than that- that is one of those surveys that people probably are not honest about! Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, keep in mind that the Kinsey data was collected in the mid 50's. {{lol}}
