A song that sweeps the nation?

I was thinking today that it seems like it's been a long time since we've had a song that TRULY swept the nation.

Back when I was a kid songs like Dire Straits MONEY FOR NOTHING and Michael Jacksons BILLIE JEAN or BEAT IT really took the country by storm and it seemed like everyone was talking about it.

The most recent song that strikes me as being as big of a national story was LOS DEL RIO with MACARENA  (sorry, but you have to admit, it was EVERYWHERE for a while).

Anyone else have any memories of songs that became cultural phenomenons?  Or think there was something recently that did the trick?

I guess this is indicative of my opinion that music needs an upturn in its quality. been awhile....hmm

Yeah, you're right.  That was a more recent example.

It usually is the poppy songs that tend to garner that kind of attention.

Yep, JUMP was huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge.

And I'd put MY HEART WILL GO ON right up there with Macarena for a recent one, maybe higher. But it had the unfair advantage of also being part of a movie that swept the nation at the same time.

This is exactly what I mean though, it feels like it's been soooooooo long since we had a REALLY big one.

I think Green Days song was close, but didn't quite reach the level of a Macerena or My Heart Will Go On.

You're right. It doesn't hurt that your song is in one of the highest grossing movies of all time.

Tennessee Girl just emailed me (she can't post during the day) and reminded me of Achy Breaky Heart.  THAT was a big one, expecially for a country song.

lol.

Ok, one more note from TG. She's seeing all the negativity about Achy Breaky Heart and wanted me to point out that she didn't say she LIKED the song, just that it swept the nation.

Also, she added Ice Ice Baby.

I don't think it got quite there but it seemed like everywhere I turned someone was talking about Kanye West "Gold Digger"

It's hard for me to say on a song like GOLD DIGGER.

I don't think it got as big as the ones we've been talking about, but then I might be biased because I so hate that style of music.

I'd have to admit that even though I never heard the song on the radio or sought it out, I was aware of it's existence.  In my "Insulated from Rap" world it managed to get noticed, so perhaps it was that big!

I know I saw editorials ripping it for it's lyrical content.  I saw comedy sketches on it.  I saw part of it performed on SNL (just until I could get to the remote to change it).

It was definately the buzz for awhile.

I said that it didn't get to that extreme, but for some reason that song popped in my head.

"Jump" was huge here too. That song always reminds me of a guy from our school that was one grade behind me. I remember he had a pea green Monte Carlo that was all jacked up in the rear with wide tires and a killer stereo. He would cruise around the school with his stereo cranked playing Jump over and over.

I don't know if it was big everywhere, but anohter big one here was John Cougar's "Jack and Diane". Maybe it was more of a "small town anthem" for high school kids, but you didn't have to go far to hear someone playing that song around here.

About all I can think of for more recent ones is Smashmouth's "All Star". I heard that one a lot when it was popular.

OK,

T-Gal swears she's done now, but she had to add two more to the fire.

Clearly this topic stuck a chord with her smile.gif

She said to mention BORN IN THE USA, which yes, absolutely, it was EVERYWHERE, aided by Reagan's misguided use of it.

And LIVIN' LA VIDA LOCA, which ushered in the Latin invasion.  Very true as well.  For awhile that guy was everywhere, although his name escapes me at the moment.

How about:

Barbie Girl

Convoy from the '70's by CW McCall (who now goes by Chip Davis and leads Manheim Steamroller!)
