The It Occurs to Me Thread

it occurs to me, that working with people from different businesses, who make 6 figure salaries, that I could do their jobs, in many cases probably with a bit more tact, wisdom, diplomacy, organizational, and follow-up skills. But what matters to me more than a 6 figure salary is integrity, peace of mind, not living to work, and not having to suck ass. The more money you make from a business, the more ass you have to kiss. Get your nose up in there, get it real real brown....blankstare

today at the grocery store I saw this odd little man in a wisconsin department of corrections uniform- a state prison guard. had the haircut and everything, but it occured to me his skin was the color of ashes. his skin was prison color, not even just pale, but prison pale. fishbelly white. it occured to me that in prison, whether you are a prisoner, or whether you are forced by the need for money to work there, you are in a prison. and if you are stuck in a prison, does it really matter which side of the cell you are on? It seems like you they would all be in the collective hell together.

Ah, but the jailors get to go home. An option not available to the inmates. I get your point though, that's pretty much the LAST job I'd want.

Coincidentally, that's what Dylan of Late Night Drive is doing now!

{{lol}} I don't know that I totally agree...you can look at it another way. The more money a business pays you, the more your ass is on the line for every little thing and the more likely your ass is the first one chewed when things go wrong. In addition, I think that in some instances you've got fewer heinies to puck up for, just the frequency and intensity of ass-kissing changes. And then, of course, your subordinates are kissing YOUR backside with frequency and fervor...it's a vicious cycle! Hahahahaha!

a few years back, I saw me having to chose to live to work like that, vs owning my life. I feel I made the right choice. the bills get paid, most days I get to leave work at work, my free time is really free. I am just responsible for me. I love it.smile

It occurs to me, while looking at old photographs, that they have the power to influence us into thinking there is actually an idealized past. Not that it was easy, but just that what we consider a simpler time not run by a clock other than daylight might somehow be ideal.
