So What Do You Think of This?

PETA is giving away free vegetarianism starter kits and is using a number of celebrity endorsements to promote their current campaign. I'm wondering what impressions you may have about their approach/comments?

Oh skip that...I think I'd rather dine on prime rib or veal parmigiana. chew.gif Just kidding! But seriously, being a vegan wasn't half as dull or painful as I expected.

I think Lady Strange is a vegetarian, so out of respect for her I'll temper my comments.

But I have absolutely NO remorse over eating meat.  I believe they're here to serve as food.  I DO however have a problem with unethical treatment of animals that are raised for the purpose of being food.

I think they should be raised under humane conditions and killed quickly and as painlessly as possible.  I know there are absolute horror stories out there about how animals are raised and eventually killed.  I think we've even had a few threads about it here.

Interesting approach Riggs. But what is your take on the campaign itself? And I can understand your thoughts on the farming of animals for meat. But who would determine humane conditions and what do you think those are? Just curious...

I think everyone knows my feelings. G-Gal - you SO rock!

I had a wonderful vegan meal tonight at the house of one of my vegan friends. It was so good.

And Riggs - out of respect for you, I just deleted everything that I was gonna say to you, so we'll just leave it at that.

G-Gal,

I didn't follow the links, but based on the banners I have no problem with them.  There's nothing wrong with PETA trying to inform people of their opinions on why they think they shouldn't be eating meat.  This campaign appears to not use the shock-value tactics that PETA usually uses, which is where I typically find myself angered with them.

People can be so stubborn - shock is often necessary.  People don't know otherwise.  And/or don't want to know.  And ignorance is no excuse.

For example, I'll bet you know at least one person that needed shock value to wake them up to a health crisis.  Someone who had to get emphysema before they finally stop smoking, or a heart attack before they start eating better?  Unfortunately, this is the case with sooooo many humans!

About these banners: Out of those three campaign ads, one is from Alec Baldwin...who's a total looney father if you ask me. Have you heard his voice mail to his daughter. He called her a "PIG" for God's sake, now he's saying not to eat it!!

And Pamela Anderson is talking about the intelligence of animals.... she's not a creditable person either if you ask me, when it comes to intelligence...... weirdface.gif

At least they are using Paul McCartney for one. "1 out of 3 ain't bad!!"

If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you can do. - Paul McCartney
Does anyone know what the connection between eating meat and saving the planet is?

Honestly, this is the first time I've heard of the connection between eating meat and global destruction.

See? You have a point there Web, I wasn't even thinking of that. I was just thinking of the person themselves who's quote it was.  Not so much the quote itself.  Now that you say that, that one is dumb too.  They all suck!!

Now I'm talking the banner ad campaign, I am not saying being a vegetarian sucks or anything like that.

I can't judge Alec as a father - I'm not there.  And no one's private voice mail is my business.  From what I can tell, she was being a spoiled brat & may have deserved it.  It's not that he was beating her or something.  No one here can tell me they never got po'd at their kid, or that their dad never got po'd at them and said something nasty.

If you want to believe rumors, Paul is the one who is a horribly abusive husband.  confused

I heard the whole voicemail Alec left his daughter. And being a parent myself, of an only child, I don't ever remember one time in my life that I would go off in that way. He was a raging lunatic! Yes, we all lose our patience with our kids. And what he did was not illegal, but it was verbally abusive 100%

Again, I'm not defending him, because I don't know him.  Or her.  But I am very familiar with some famous people, and their kids are NOT like you or I - they really aren't.  It's a strange life they lead.

I also think it's horrible that a private message was made public for everyone to hear.  That's just wrong.  no.gif

Really, my question was not just to be a smart azz.  Both Paul and Alec make mention of the environment and I'm not making the connection between eating meat and the environment.

I could however, add to Paul's "If anyone wants to save the planet" comment and add that the next step could be to stop driving your fossil fuel-burning vehicle to Starbucks every day for coffee that comes in a cup made of chemicals that will only be used one time before being placed in the ground to rot.

If everyone in the world stopped doing that, that could help as well.

Unfortunately I have Ulcerative Colitis so I can't do roughage like vegetables and salads very often and get away with it. I love vegetables and fruits they just don't love me.

So it's either meat or no me! cry.gif

We are omnivores. We're meant to have both meat and vegetables. I respect an individual's decision to be a vegetarian, but I feel it is a personal decision and not something you can force on someone else.

I really don't see the problem with using other animal products, such as milk, as long as the animal is treated ethically. And I can now get organic milk and cheese at a national grocery chain.

And personally, I don't eat meat every day. I do try to eat some sort of protein at every meal, but I can tell the difference when I eat meat; I have more energy for a longer period of time. Also, with my diet restrictions, it's just easier to eat some meat.

I don't like PETA. Yes, sometimes it takes shock value, but in PETA's case, it hasn't worked. It's made them look like radicals. And sometimes I question whether the organization is trying to attract attention to their specific cause or just the organization themselves.

But, businesses in America do not make wise ethical decisions (which goes beyond the subject of just animals). I know locally the topic of sustainability has been a big one. I hope it's something that grows to a national scale, and more ethical products are easier to come by.
