What the heck is going on in America????

Ah yes, the annual Juneteenth festivals. Or as I like to call it, "Hooligans on parade".

Here's the Milwaukee version from yesterday. Last year they merely tore down a tent and beat bystanders with the poles. This year they took it to the street.

I can't wait for our community leaders to come forth and start telling us again how this is really OUR fault, for not understanding and reaching out to the minority community.

Milwaukee Police say a 33-year-old man has a broken tooth and cuts all over his face after a group of teenagers pulled him from his car and beat him following Milwaukee's Juneteenth celebration.

It happened after the festival ended in the 3000 block of north 1st Street which is a short distance from the actual festival. Police say hundreds of teenagers started kicking the man's car. Today's TMJ 4 video from the scene shows the teenagers damaging at least several cars.

The man who was pulled from his car was treated and released from a local hospital.

Meanwhile, a few blocks away a group of girls started fighting. When police went to break up the fight near 1st and Auer, the department says a 17-year-old girl started punching and kicking a 15-year veteran officer.

She hit him in his face shield, which shattered into his face. He needed three stitches and has scratches on his neck. That 17-year-old was arrested and police are recommending charges for battery to a police officer.

Police say there was also a fight earlier in the day in the 3000 block of north 1st Street. In that case, three women were fighting. Police say a 15-year-old boy tried to break up the fight when an 18-year-old man got involved in it.

According to police, the 18-year-old got angry, walked away and told the boy he was coming back with a gun. The 18-year-old did in fact return with a gun and fired five shots into a crowd where the boy was standing. The 15-year-old's 39-year-old uncle was hit in the shoulder. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

Some people think the violence takes away from the real meaning of Juneteenth.

"I think it should be continued," said Earnestine Rogers. "It shouldn't be stopped because of some youngsters."

It's the second year in a row that violence has broken out at the celebration.

What is going on? In my opinion:

Its the decline of morals, ethics, and common sense amongst our fellow humans.

Its this whole mentality of "if it feels right do it". Its no longer politically correct to have right and wrong standards of conduct, its now "whats right for me is all that matters".

Our pastor is currently doing a sermon series on the book of Judges. I'd never really studied Judges that throughly before but there are many parallels from then with what we are experiencing today with "they did as they saw fit in their own eyes". Even back then It was a continuing cycle. Its history repeating itself and it didn't turn out so well before, I doubt it will be much better this time.

But again, thats just my opinion.

Report: State waited to close Tulsa daycare where child died

Tulsa, OK (AP) - A new report says the state Department of Human Services waited for criminal charges against a Tulsa day care owner before closing the day care center where a 2-year-old boy died.

The child at the day care owned by Vicki Chiles died the day D-H-S stepped in to shut it down. Police say Chiles admitted tying the hands of 2-year-old Joshua Minton and putting masking tape over his mouth because he wouldn't be quiet during nap time. The boy was found unconscious and died later at a Tulsa hospital.

Chiles had been accused of hitting an 8-year-old boy with a flyswatter in April but a report by the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth says D-H-S was waiting for the charge to be filed before closing the day care.

Chiles was charged May 16th. The boy died the following day.

This is the take on it by one of our local talk show hosts. I think his point is very valid. I listened to talk radio this morning, and the calls coming from the inner city all wanted to blame the cops for not moving in fast enough (they were there in under two minutes I would say) or just minimizing the situation by trying to justify the actions of these poor, unemployed, unmotivated kids.

When their community SHOULD be expecting more of it's youth and expressing some outrage at the situation.

The violence after Tuesday's Juneteenth Day Celebration is a microcosm of the crisis in Milwaukee's central city.

Residents of the central city are largely peaceful, law abiding, and responsible: they were the folks who attended the daylong event without incident.

But there is also a substantial subculture -- a thug subculture -- that is seen violently acting out here.

What's clear is the law-abiding majority is unable to control the thug-culture... or confront it -... or address it in a meaningful way.

Despite the stakes, the organizers and community leaders could not control the youth who wilded the cars; nor were they willing and/or able to confront them. There are no grownups trying to intervene or protect the victims. In effect, they ceded the streets to the thugs.

And this morning, instead of outrage, we got calls minimizing the incidents.

Unfortunately, it is an all too familiar pattern.

I saw something on PBS, a special on baby boomers maybe, that kind of explained the difference with society today. It really is all about how we were raised. I can't remember if it was the baby boomers themselves, or baby boomers as parents, but this special said children started to take a different role in the home. The economy was better, technology was better, and kids were treated differently, basically spoiled a bit more instead of having to go work on the farm. Parents wanted to give kids the things they never got to have. But then those kids grew up learning that that's how kids are raised; they didn't realized how privileged they really were. So it's been a domino effect, with each generation giving their kids more than the last.

So kids no longer know how to deal with hardship. And the ones that do, are kind of looked down upon by general society, instead of recognizing that they grew up with values that most people no longer have.

We no longer have bad winters and a shortage of food. We no longer have to plan for the whole year to make sure there are balanced meals on the table. We don't even have to plan for the whole week, or even the whole day. Basically, as a society, we're spoiled brats.

Boy, that sounds right to me.

I don't think we understand hardship at all, myself included. Any chance it was an episode of Frontline? I tape those and see I have a few episodes waiting for me. I'd like to see this!

At any rate, I don't think it was Frontline (though I love Frontline!). It was a special 2 or 3 part series on baby boomers. Let me see if I can find it.
