Time to clean out the cupboards

Every six months or so I like to take a two or three week break from food shopping and finish absolutely EVERYTHING in the house.

Empty the cupboard, the freezer, etc.

So it's a period of eating some pretty odd meals.

Today I made a package of wheat Rotini, mixed in a few turkey hot dogs, added some italian seasoning and a can of pizza sauce I had left over from a Chef-Boy-Arde pizza kit and that's my lunch and supper.

Surprisingly not bad.

Anybody else follow this clean out the cupboards ritual?  Or am I alone?

Oh, I should add that this would be PERFECT with some parmesan cheese sprinked on it, but I have none and as I said, this is a cleaning out project, so I can't go get any hmm.gif

oh that's funny! No we like the experiment version. Try cooking something only to find out that it is no longer good. hmm

I think that's why I do this!

I grew up in a house where we had food stacked from floor to ceiling in the pantry but my Mom would always say we had no food in the house.  I'd point to the pantry or the freezer that you couldn't even fit a frozen pizza into and she'd say "I don't know if any of that is any good anymore" weirdface.gif

She STILL does that!

I go to her house and try to make a sandwich, I'll pull out the mayo and she'll say "Oh, don't use that, that's old".  But when I try to throw it out she insists on putting it back in there!

Weird family I come from hmm.gif

we are not that bad. My motto is " you wanna try it, go for it." biggrin
I did that with the girl. She wanted some bagels. I couldn't remember the last time we bought any, but she ate one and didn't get sick .

We had a horrible breakfast event due to some bad pancake/waffle batter! bleh

We at least check the expiration date on mac & cheese now. We do learn-lol

I usually do a pretty quick turn around with most of my food.

We usually end up with stuff that REQUIRES other ingredients that I don't have (eggs, milk, butter).

Yeah, I got a box and a half of pancake batter I'll be eating over the next seven to ten days hmm.gif

Hope none of that has gone bad.

I usually don't end up with too much lingering in the pantry. If I do, I donate it to Second Harvest or a local food program.

I give all the food I decided I don't want anymore when the annual post office drive comes around.

Other than that, I just try to clean it up myself, even if I don't like it.

I should donate more of it though.

I donated a lot of food after I found out about my allergies. I think my friends loved it, they all got free food! (At least, the perishable stuff that I couldn't donate to the food bank.)

But yes, we do that sometimes. I'll refuse to go shopping because we still have food in the cupboard. This is all stuff that we say we like and wouldn't give away. I notice we get in funks where we eat the same thing all the time and just don't eat the stuff in our cupboard!

Exactly MZ!

Like I decide I want beans, so I'll buy three cans.  Eat two of em', and then never feel like having beans again for the next year, so they just sit there for ever.

I finally realized a few years ago I just gotta eat what I buy.  Too much wastin' was goin' on.

Exactly! I went through a tuna phase. I had tuna noodle casserole, tuna salad, etc. Then of course, I got tired of tuna. I now have 3 cans of tuna in the cupboard. I'll go home, open the cupboard, and say, "I could have tuna... Nah." Or, I'll say, "I'll make some tuna salad the next time I bake bread." Then I bake the bread and forget all about the tuna salad until after the bread is gone.

I do not have a ritual, but food does not last long in my home either. My cupboards are packed with stuff that I needed for at least one recipe, otherwise it is gone before the next trip. When I was single though, I had issues like you all do. But a teenager will eat you out of house and home!
