Love It Or Hate It? MEATLOAF

OK...This could get me in trouble with The Grand Pubah Jeremy Cuz he like's the guy, But I can't STAND Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf.

I Love Meatloaf the food

The Musician...not so much...especially that song...

Any others in that boat...or am I in the minority?

Oh man.

You've decided to criticize my ALL time favorite artist!

I gotta say, I have never, EVER, seen a person put more effort into their singing than Mr. Loaf.

But, you've probably noticed he's mysteriously absent from Freeze-Frame Radio except for the occassional request.

Unfortunately I learned early on that the length of his songs sends listeners scrambling for other stations, and if you're a true fan like me, the radio edit is never acceptable (how can you trim away even a LITTLE of the loaf?  It just doesn't work).

So, my vote.  LOVE IT!

Come on listeners!  Support me!  What about that gal that always requests him, if you're out there, register your thoughts!  The kingdom is under assault!

I liked Paradise when it came out in the seventies, but it seems like a one trick pony that he's managed to keep doing.

Almost everything sounds the same and if he's not paired up with Steinman he can't even manage a hit

Hates a strong word, but Ill go with strongly dis... ah the hell with it.  HATE IT!

lol...I knew that would be a topic you could get behind...and get a big response for my first thread...I admit I haven't seen a show in person, so I'm probably missing out, but EVERY High school dance, and every college formal I have ever attended plays that song... maybe it's just a matter of principle, or the length...I don't know...I just cringe when I hear it...then again, my all time  favorite artist is Weird Al...so you gotta take my opinion w/ that in mind.

PS Jeremy, no hurt intended...just trying to think of a good discussion topic...there are those on both sides of the fence. have a great night

Mozcrzy,

No offense taken man!  That's the fun of a board like this.  I'm hoping we hear from some other folks on the topic.

Thanks for helping get this forum going!  Hopefully we'll convert our other listeners into active members over the next few months.

Rumor has it that Mr Riggs hits the excercise bike and belts out Meatloaf songs while doing so to get the most out of his work outs, and to scare the bejebus out of his little puppy and the neighbors. Aw heck, that's not even a rumor....

Stop spilling secrets or I'll tell everyone that's not really you on the Freeze Frame web cam!

Oops, I guess I already did

Belting out the Loaf....you know it's just tough keeping a straight face, not only just thinking about you scaring puppies, but also thinking about refering to a man as "Mr. Loaf"

Hey, there was a guy just slightly more infatuated w/ Transformers Than I am and he legally changed his name to "Optimus Prime"  Mr. Prime foght some time in Iraq...weird...I'm sure he got razzed, but man if you were named Mr. Loaf...hmmm

Yeah,

Charging into Iraq on the back of a tank with a name like Optimus Prime, I don't know, that's almost a surreal image.  Sounds like the latest installment of a Sly Stallone Futuristic Thriller!

I think in Loaf's case, he was just smart enough to realize Marvin Lee Aday wasn't a name that looked good on a Marquee, and didn't exactly scream rock-star

And a ground beef quick 'n' easy meal just gave him that 'rock' edge huh

You got me there.

I can't imagine anyone figured MEATLOAF would be an easy sell to a record company.  Hey, you're not a Meat Loaf fan, so you probably didn't buy his last album.

Even the mighty Loaf has fallen and used voice modulation   Only on one song, but still, very disappointing.  That DEFINATELY is a trend I would like to see come to an end.

Your post about modulation left out the biggest culprit of all, Britney Spears.  Her FIRST single used it and I think nearly every one SINCE has used it.

I have a theory that she was actually born without vocal cords, and she's got one of those electonic voice boxes that she uses to sing with!

Yeah I knew about Ms. Spears, but I really didn't want to admit I got her albums...but since I've admited to liking Transformers & Weird Al... I guess I can admit liking Spears too...though I liked the whole package in album 1 & 2, but her self titled Britney, didn't even bother with...now it's "She's Hot...Music's Not" and the more I look back on it, I the more I think I just liked the way she looked rather than her music...

Maybe that's why I never dug the Loaf....not big on the long haired, pleasantly plump, MEN...

Nope...Weird Al disproves that theory....I'm going back to the HS dance theory

Man, Britney is a perfect example of a manufactured star.

I've always been VERY into music, and I swear to God I heard more ABOUT her in the six months before her album came out than I ever heard BY her.

They had pre-ordained her America's new pop-princess and then followed it up with slick production, slick videos, lots of advertising and LOTS AND LOTS of sex appeal.

I'll admit it too, I've boughten more than one CD based on the appearance of the female singer on the cover.  I'm just a typical guy, I can get suckered into anything if there's a hot looking woman on the packaging.

But like you said, somewhere around the third album a line was crossed.  I went from being embarassed to admit I liked her music to PROUD to say I can't stand HER.

In a way I feel bad though too, because I think she's a train wreck and have a feeling she's only headed for a lot of pain.

I read an article once on Gweneth Paltrow and they asked her why she thought so many teen stars are messed up for life, I thought she had a very keen observation.

She said that she thinks your emotional growth stops at the point you become rich and famous.  So if you get fame and money at age say, 35, you're probably gonna be alright.

But when you get fame and money at age 15 or 16 or even later, you never experience REAL life again.  You get used to everyone doing ANYTHING you want them to, you never hear the word NO, and you never learn the realities of life.

I think that makes a lot of sense.

Sad thing is that it's the youth (or should I say good looking youth) that sells in this country, and as long as that is a fact in this country, there are going to be more 20-something trainwrecks in Hollywood or Musicland....

As for that last Loaf Song...I'm undecided....I'll keep trying...just warn us b4 P by the DL...I don't think I'll ever be turned on to that one

You know what, I'll bet you've never been SOLD on it.

There's two things you have to take into account when entering Loafdom.

ONE - Meatloaf's music is like an audio play.  Jim Steinman says he never writes a song without envisioning a character singing it.  They're not songs so much as they are epic tales :)

TWO - If you see Meatloaf in concert, get GOOD seats (I refuse to go if I can't get in the front 3 rows) and you will be SOLD on the music.  I've never been to another concert where the singer truly seems to lose himself in the music.  He spends most of the show with his eyes closed, belting out the music, and when he's done he looks like he needs an IV to replenish his fluid level.

Paradise is AMAZING when you see them do the whole acting out of the "baseball" sequence, and then the last 3 to 5 minutes when they're screaming about how they can't wait for the end of time.  NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT :)

Oh, another tip, if you DO ever get the opportunity to go to a Loaf concert, and sit in the front row or close to it, MAKE SURE YOU'RE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE STAGE!

That's where Patti Russo, the georgous female singer who does the duets with him stands and sings.  I'd much rather be ten feet from her than from Loaf.  Besides, if you're on the right hand of the stage you need weatherproof clothing because of all the sweat he's spraying at you

Rain Gear huh...Jeremy...let me guess...you are the kind of Guy  who would bid on a sweat soaked towel on e-bay from the Loaf

you know though...keep selling, it's kinda working...if he comes to town I might try it on your recommendation

Well, I don't know if I'd go so far as to buy a sweat-soaked towel, but I did try purchasing one of his gold albums on ebay.  Dropped out at $200.  Started getting too rich for my blood.

hahaha I still remember the night Riggs, Roberts and myself came up with the penguin with a mullet mascot idea. I insisted, and they felt it was a good idea. RIggs got to work on right away and the next day our mascot was born. I think everyone must have had a few of their favorite coctails the night we came up with that, because the next day I recall asking "what the hell were we thinking?!?!" LOL.

Yeah, that's right.  I remember that.  I DO recall thinking twice about it the next day, but in the end, you gotta go with the pudgy, mullet-wearing, billy beer drinking, rubics cube playing Penguin.  Even his stance, it's like he's holding his arms out and saying WHAT GIVES!

The thing that goes un-noticed because we had to shrink the logo down so much is the Don Johnson stubble we gave him :)

Pulling this out from WAY back....I love how right after Vanilla Ice, an 'artist' Riggs apprently hates, The Loaf Is immediately played next to "cleanse" the radio waves

Now that you mention it, I do recall my aunt trying to tell me a story on her death bed about my parents giving up my less attractive, slightly impaired twin brother for adoption on the black market to pay for some home repairs they wanted to have done.

I always wrote it off as the medication talking, but hmmmmmmmmmmm, I wooooonder...

I love Meatloaf (both the singer and the food, but it's the singer of which I speak of right now.), but I gotta tell you, I hate to hear his live stuff.  I cringe when I hear that song (of COURSE, since I was trying to remember, I can't!) that is live on freezeframe every now and then.  You took the words right out of my mouth, that's it.  Anyway, I can't stand the live version.  His voice is so horribly wobbly and it just doesn't sound good to me.  I did not like that VH1 special they had with him on it for the exact same reason.  Love, love, love his recorded in studio tracks, but don't like the live.  I think I'm repeating myself too often.  I need sleep.  Gotta get up in less than 5 hours and still have work to do.  Not good.  See you guys in the morning.  Or type to you.  Whatever.

WOW!

I could NOT be more surprised by your comments Trish!

I am the exact opposite of you.

I don't like his studio stuff at all, but feels like he just let's it rip on the concert stuff.

But I have to admit, I've seen him live like 5 times and I always pay an unGodly amount to sit in the first or second row, so there's a very enjoyable memory associated with the concert versions I guess.

MAN I wish he'd put out another album SOON.  Has last one REALLY rocked, but was totally ignored by the record buying public

Well I didn’t want to go the momma route, but unless she was pregnant for 10 years(since we’ve established on the boards that I am around a decade younger), Your cybershot falls flat my friend… If you’d said “younger sibling” I’d have no recourse…but the whole “you having an unattractive TWIN thing”  & the fact that I know you family is in the child labor business…hmmm

K…WAY off the meatloaf track here…Um…HAd some for lunch about a week ago…still better than the singer I believe…I just can’t get into his style no matter how many times I hear it…I’ll admit though I haven’t gone running from the station so he doesn’t bug me as much as he used to.
