Health Insurance

I had it too good at my last job.  They paid for health insurance, and I had a flex card.  But now I'm back to being uninsured and weighing my options.  I've never bought health insurance on my own, I've always had it through an employer or had none at all.

I still have an HSA open from an old plan, so now I'm debating what to do.  Do I just keep putting money in the HSA on my own to cover my costs and not get insurance, or do I get a high deductible insurance plan?  But if I get insurance, what if my allergies are a pre-existing condition?  That's the main thing I need the insurance for.

Anyone been through this?

anytime you have a lapse of coverage it can consider things pre-existing. Allergies shouldnt be a problem but you never know what each policy will be like.

through my employer.

when I was unemployed, there was something called the wisconsin taxpayer alliance (perhaps there is something similar in Indiana), where I paid about $100 a month for health insurance coverage. Not sure how good it was/ never used it.

There is catastrophic coverage as well which might be a good relatively affordable option...

Now, we are covered through my wife's job at the bank. Before she started working there we were paying for it ourselves. Individual health insurance is terribly expensive. When we were paying for it ourselves, we had to have it be "Major Medical" only with a HUGE deductible. We figured that we had to have something just in case something big happened.

I'm thankful we were on the plan we are when I had my surgery three years ago. The bills from that one illness were over $60,000.

I was really lucky when we had little A, we had double insurance coverage. She was in the ICU for a few weeks and I was in the hospital for several days, its was well over 50,000 I dont recall the exact cost. I paid $60 out of pocket for the entire pregnancy and hospital stay.

That's just not right. We really need to get health care costs under control.

It's ridiculous how much a few days in the hospital can cost you.

its because of the "sue" happy people in this country. Malparactice insurance is about 1/3 to 1/2 of what the doctors make.

We're covered under my husband's employer. There is talk though that they want to get away from providing it, so it's a "wait and see" thing.

I know back when my youngest daughter was born, she spent 3 weeks in the Neo-natal ICU.  At that time, her hospital bill was well over $100,000.....she was a premie and had to have a couple of surgeries right after she was born.  Thankfully, we didn't have to pay any of it because our insurance picked up the whole thing.

Mz, as Ally says, you're going to want to check around and see what different policies consider a pre-existing condition to be.  It varies widely among the different companies.  You can also ask about the different types of coverages.....the type of coverage and the premium varies widely even within the same company depending on what you select.

Yeah, I want to see it too, but it will probably make me even more ticked off than I already am over the health care crisis.

Voted none as our health service is payed for through our taxes, we can still buy private health care but I don't bother as the National Health Service is alright for me.

Now there's a good point! probably moving here, your dollar is only worth half what the pound is so everything is gonna cost you double! So I would stick to the Health Plan! Plus our weather sucks!
