My mother keeps proving to me that we did the right thing by not doing a big wedding here. She is trying to take over things for my sister's wedding (again) and is telling her how she is doing things wrong. My sister just called me and told me that she was gonna kill her! She is now inviting Mary Kay Cosmetics people! My mom is a consultant. If my sister is lucky it will just be the one lady I know. But my sister does not know these people. She is not supposed to be inviting people that she has not been told to invite!

Yes it is, Deadwood the series takes place back in the "olden days" of Seth Bullock and Wild Bill Hickock. The Deadwood of today is a gambling town. (same Deadwood though).

Oh my god - me too! So happy I went to Vegas to elope!
My best (& pretty much only female) friend is getting married this year, and I have to go to the shower this upcoming weekend. I love her dearly, but a SHOWER?! :blech: Somebody save me (That was meant to be sung like the Cinderella song...)
And - swear to god - the bridesmaid dress cost more than 2Xs what my wedding dress did. (I wore a white Frederick's of Hollywood dress - Freaking AWESOME!) And with the gifts and everything -- seriously, I'm spending more on hers than I did on mine!

What I find funny is that they are just getting married at the courthouse and it is just gonna be the 2 of them and the 6 kids. So my Mom is trying to take over the reception. She had wanted to give us a reception too, but she didn't want to listen to us and we stalled so long that we didn't have one. Again I believe we did the right thing. My sister threw me a bridal shower so I believe that was good enough.
New Deadwood looks like fun!

My mom & Aunt tried to throw a reception too. No THANKS!
And I hate bridal showers. Almost half as much as I hate baby showers. I mean, what's with that stupid paper plate hat anyway? Henhouses - yech. I can't believe I have to sit through one this weekend.

Huh? Paper plate hat? Henhouses?
My aunt threw me a bridal shower, and it really was just a lot of sitting around, eating, and chatting. We played a couple stupid games, but they couldn't have been too bad, because I don't even remember them. But then, I picked my aunt as my maid of honor, because I knew she'd throw a decent bridal shower.
Personally, I think I throw a pretty good bridal shower. I did do a couple games, but they were funny. (A mad libs, and one where I took a bunch of items from around the house and people wrote a story about the couple using the brand names of the items.)
I think we played 2 games but I only remember the toilet paper wedding dress one. That was funny! I am not a girly girl so I don't care for these type of showers either. I really don't care that much for baby showers where they insist you play games.

I definitely prefer bachelorette parties. The last friend who got married had a rockin bachelorette party. We took her up to Indy for lunch, then got her a massage and a manicure, then rented a clubhouse with an apartment above it where we had an adult toy party, then went out to dinner and drinks, then back to the clubhouse for more drinks where we crashed in the apartment for the night so no one had to drive home.

You've never seen them make the hat out of a paperplate and all of the ribbons and bows from the gifts? Then the bride-to-be wears it on her head. It's embarrassing as well as ridiculous. I'm surprised you've never seen it (lucky you.)
"Henhouse" refers to being stuck in a room with all women talking their woman talk. Like at a shower or a beauty parlor or something. (I don't do well with that situation at all.)

Never been to one. But the massage part sounds nice...

Nope, never seen the paper hat. But, we've put ribbons on a paper plate before for the bride to hold as a bouquet during the rehearsal.
Ah, I call that "tittering". Luckily, I think my girlfriends and I are a bit different in that regard. (Same group as the bachelorette party.)

So MZ - I went to the horrible henhouse hell this weekend, and not only did they make her a paperplate hat... There were so many ribbons, that they made her a hat and a bouquet.

I picture a bridal shower for LS with games such as pin the ponytail on the Dokken, a skull cap with concert tickets dangling....
Ha ha. I like that idea! But I was polite & didn't impose on my friends & family with all that junk - I went to Vegas & eloped! This whole thing this weekend cost me close to $200!
