Where were you 10 years ago?

I was at a wedding reception in Chicago when I heard that Princess Diana had died. The bride was crushed that they announced it. She loved Diana and that was upsetting, but it ruined the mood at the reception.

I was home alone (wife & son had driven to NJ to visit family) and saw the news updates on CNN/MSNBC

I don't recall her dying. I only recall the funeral and the fact Elton John was gonna sing at it.

He sang "Candle in the wind" which was always among my favorite Elton John songs, but he altered it for Diana.

I was probably at school, and although it was shocking, I wasn't all that interested. But I had a friend who was really interested, and even bought Diana's version of Candle in the Wind.

Hey, JR, you stole my response! ;)

I do remember being mad that Diana was getting all this attention, but then Mother Theresa died around the same time, and barely anything was done for her.

She wasn't friends with Elton John though......I do remember a version of Bennie & the Jets for here though....I think it was called Theresa and the nuns.....

For my some reason I remember my Mom being obsessed with the whole funeral thing.

I did watch part of it on TV. But in my mind the whole thing was a little tainted with my distaste for the whole concept of "royalty".

Don't get me wrong, I felt bad for her and her children. But I just found it annoying that this woman was considered so important because she was a "princess".

I forgot about Mother Theresa.  Now that you've mentioned it though, you're right, I recall thinking she was lost in the shuffle to a large degree.

I was up at the cottage and heard it on the radio.  I was saddened when I heard it......I always thought of her as the "peoples' princess"...someone who truly cared about people and their plights, not just a political figure head.  I remember thinking about her boys and how awful it had to be to lose their mother at such a young age.

I remember walking from the bathroom into the bedroom, and hearing that she'd died on TV.  I was surprised because she was young, but it didn't really affect me.

I hated the re-done "Candle In the Wind", and what made it worse is that I was working at the record store, and the thing was flying off the shelf!  (Although if I recall, the proceeds went to charity, so that is nice.)  I remember Elton saying he couldn't get with Bernie to write a new song in time for the funeral, which is why they just changed up the lyrics to that English Rose crap.

That's probably the one thing that really struck me Ghost.

I learned so much about her from the funeral proceedings.  I had no idea how much she had done for people and how beloved she was.  I think I was a lot sadder about her passing after the funeral than I was before.

Elton John - Candle in the Wind
for my death theme- this song reminds most of us of Diana and her death

But I'm being a spoil-sport, I know.  I'll shut up now.

It was not enough of an impact on me that I remember where I was. I remember hearing it, but I can't place myself like I can with other things like 9/11.

I was in a hotel room with my ex-stalker boyfriend when they announced on tv. I was just in shock! I remember being very sad. She seemed like such a caring person who was gone too soon.

I had just gotten home from wherever I was, and turned on the tv to catch weather and sports, and then right before they signed off the news, the guy announced this just in-that she had been in a serious car accident. then leno came on......
I think I was lying on the couch resting my eyes, and it was one of those things you hear that make you open your eyes and go "did I just hear that or dream it".

I was working at Super K Mart and had just gotten home after work and hearing the news. Like most others it did not affect me as much as others but I was very sad. I personally thought she was one of the most beautiful and stylish women of the day.

you know who was really brilliant? mother theresa. she once said "all I want to be able to control is a foot in front of, and a foot above and below my face", the rest is the rest of the world...something to that effect. she was brilliant!! 1 thing, the here & now, is all that exists.

& this one always hit me-

it goes something like "I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love."

I remember sitting in Bible Class that Sunday morning when they were all abuzz about it, and I was aghast that something that momentus had gotten past me. BUt... that morning, things were hectic getting the babies ready for church and out the door, so I hadn't even turned on the TV.

As a result, I always feel this compulsive need to at least flick on a TV each morning to make sure the world is still in one piece before I walk out the door for the day.
