The Ringle

RIAA And Major Labels To Launch The Ringle

posted by Matt on September 11th, 2007 in Music, Industry News, News

The RIAAIn an effort to curb the slide in cd single sales of the last few years, the RIAA and other major labels are offering up a possible solution to the problemthe ringle.

The idea is to captialize on the booming sales of cell phone ringtones many of the music buying youth seem to be spending their hard earned cash on these days. The ringle will be packaged similar to the traditional singlesthe song, a remix track and maybe another song from the bands album. The difference with the ringle will be the addition of a code for consumers to go online and download the track they purchased as a ringtone. The labels hope this will be a perfect marriage of the online and offline as well as helping to get traditional music stores in the digital ringtone market.

The ringle is expected to retail for around $6 and major labels like Sony BMG and Universal are planning on rolling the ringle out with about 50 and 20 titles respectively starting this October/November.

Major retail chains like Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy and Amazon have already agreed to carry the ringle in their stores.

Hm, I don't think I'd pay $6 for that. The download the song would be $1, to download the remix or a b-side would be $1, and a ringtone is usually $1-2.

Hartz, those ringtone prices are on the rise!

They want up to $3.49 for a 15 second ringtone of hits from the 80's on Sprint!

I have learned to just use the record feature to record my favorite song, then assign it as a ringtone.

Those greedy jerks shouldn't be charging more than .99 for a ringtone. For crying out loud, it's FIFTEEN SECONDS OF A SONG!!!!

Even at $3.49, they're still overcharging for the Ringle. Are we paying an extra $0.50 for convenience? I thought the point was to encourage CD sales...

Your mistake MzHartz is trying to apply logic to the situation.

The RIAA doesn't so anything logically.

These are the folks who when rolling out digital downloads thought it was fair to ask for $3.99 per song.  Despite the fact they were selling physical singles for $2.99 at the time.

Somehow, these braniacs thought a product in which they saved money on the physical CD, the artwork, the production of the CD & artwork, and the distribution of the CD's to retail locations was worth $1.00 more to the consumer!  weirdface.gif

See!  No logic there. blankstare
