The UF Student taser incident

Apparently this was on TV a lot last night.  I heard about it on the radio this morning.  What do you think about it?

Wow!!!  This is the first I've seen or heard about this, and all I can say is wow!!  I think this was waaaaaay too much excessive force used.  He told the cops he would walk out if they would just let him go.  I see no reason whatsoever to have used a Taser on him.

This brings up all kinds of Constitutional issues for me, with the main one being freedom of speech.  Was this some kind of a closed meeting or something, or was this a public event?  How was the student out of line by asking the questions he was asking?  Are we living in such a policed state that you can now be tased for expressing your own opinion or asking questions?  This is very disturbing to me!!

I've read up on some background. Apparently the Q&A session was over, and the student forced his way to the front because he didn't get a chance to ask his question. Kerry said to let him ask his question. Then someone determined that he was badgering Kerry and turned off the mic. This guy also has a website where he does pranks and films them, and there's a debate on whether or not he did this as another stunt. Also, one of the videos is from his own camera.

When they turned the mic off, Kerry again said that it was okay and he'd answer his question, but police started escorting him off. I think the police were wrong to do that, at that point they should've turned the mic off and let Kerry answer the question (which if you listen, he attempts to do during the struggle) without touching the student.

But, had the student cooperated, I suspect he would've been let go at the station. Since he was struggling and it was taking multiple officers to restrain him and they still couldn't get the cuffs on, I can understand why the officer gave him a jolt. It couldn't have been much of one, because all it did was make him say ow (and get the other handcuff on). I think at that point the student was trying to make it a publicity stunt.

I saw this on the news this morning and I thought the officers were way out of line. Now that I've seen the whole thing, it looks to me that this kid was trying to get a reaction. I feel that way because of the aggressive nature of the way he was asking the questions. Actually, he was just ranting and not asking his question when the first lady officer told him to get to his question. She told him to get to his question and he elevated his aggressiveness and continued ranting.

They gave him more time and he still didn't get to his question, so they told him he was done. He resisted. Sure, after they had control of him on the floor he THEN said he was willing to walk out but before that, they were trying to lead him out by the arm and he was resisting. They met his resistance with force. I do agree it was more than necessary, but I think he was trying to get a reaction and they gave him what he was looking for.

I don't think the taser was necessary, but he clearly continued to resist. Even though he was saying "I'll walk out", he was still trying to pull away from them.

I think they used more force then necessary, but I think he was trying to get a reaction.

Yeah, I purposely posted the longer one. There were a lot of cameras there, and you can get a few more veiwpoints with a YouTube search. But by not showing the whole thing, it gives a skewed perspective.

Was that university cops that tasered him? I have a real problem with university cops. To me, they are nothing more than armed mall guards...

i think that my 14 year old needs to see this to get a clue about what a smart beligerant mouth can get you when you are disrespectful and have an attitude of entitlement.  where can i get one of those?

i have mixed feelings about whether the punishment fit the crime.  i really don't think we should just go around tazing people.  *are those things illegal for civilian people to carry? *

i'm not sure that this is a matter of free speech.  if this incident happened in a country where free speech was really an issue, the tazer wouldn't have been needed.

*maybe i could find a low dose tazer*

What I saw on the news was VERY well selective video to make it appear much differently from what this video shows. On the news, they showed just a couple seconds of him speaking, then they cut to him on the floor getting the taser. They conveniently forgot to show the part where he was jumping around flailing his arms and trying to pull away from them.

This is not pointed at you Ghost, but the "Freedom Of Speech" card is another issue that gets my fur up.

I think "Freedom Of Speech" in our constitution is about having the right to your own views and the freedom to voice them without fear of repercussion. I don't think that "Freedom Of Speech" means freedom to disrupt an event, harass other people, or make a general nuisance out of yourself to others.

I think "Freedom Of Speech" means you have the right to your opinion, not the right to be an ass.

I'm pretty sure you can get a taser. Wasn't there a story of a guy who tried a taser out on himself?

In all honesty I am suprised they didn't taser him sooner. The first time he kind of brushed off the cops(mall guards?) away when they first approached him. yea, you don't do that....hmm

Ok, so maybe he was trying to get a reaction, and maybe I'm still missing something here......but why did the police grab him to begin with?  What gave them the right to do that?  From this video, the student wasn't showing a predisposition to becoming violent in any way and as Mz said Kerry was still willing to answer the kid's questions.

I don't know guys, but this really bothers me in a very fundamental way.  I don't like the idea that you can be handcuffed, tased, and forcefully removed for stating opinions (ranting if you want to call it that) or asking questions, even if it takes you a while to get to the question.

Maybe it's the liberal-minded protester that resides within me, but I don't like what I saw in this video.

Like I said, I think the police were wrong to remove him, but I don't think they used force until he started acting irrationally.

its people like this kid that have no respect for the police that are creating a world thats not safe to live in. Police officers are to create peace...keep pain in the ass people from disrupting the rest of the world..maybe drunks...drugs...or just plain disorderly conduct. They asked him to leave and he didnt...they asked him again and he didnt...they tried to remove him without cuffs and he resisted...multiple times...he got what he deserved in my opinion.
