Your First Job

Ah! To be making your own money in the 1980s and not be relying on mom and dad! To exercise responsibility, develop your work ethic, and to pay your old man the $900 back that he lent you so that you could by that '74 Gremlin with 180,000 miles on it. How did you begin your working career? French-fryer or Pickle Person? Bus-boy or grocery bagger? Any funny stories to relate?

I worked for several years as a clerk in a corner hardware store. When I first began in 1986, the shoppers were mainly older people looking to buy a nut and a bolt and visit for awhile. By the time I left, most of the old timers were gone and we had been held up and broken into a number of times. The good old days of the 80's were over. I quit soon after this drunk cross-dresser threw 1/2 a can of beer at me for not calling the local news for some reason....

Quite the series of interesting new threads you've started there J.D.!

Good way for all of us to get to know each other!

My first job wasn't "Really" a job I would say.  I cleaned up after school and the janitor would pay me out of his pocket, usually two or three dollars ALL IN COINS.

In hindsight, I'd bet anything that I wasn't supposed to be doing that, he was just taking advantage of a kid eager to earn some cash so he probably paid me out of his pocket to do a good portion of the work he was getting a much better salary to do!

At the tender age of 12 or 13 I was already a sub-contractor!

My first REAL job wasn't until 87, almost a FULL YEAR after I had graduated.  I still remember my mom yelling at me to get off the couch and go get a job   She would say "The jobs aren't gonna find you!  You gotta go in and ask people if they're hiring!"

Eventually she got word from a friend who worked at the grocery store that they were hiring utility clerks.  I applied and got the job.  I've worked every day of my life since that moment

My funniest memory from that job was that I was making $3.35 and hour (that was minimum wage in 87) and the store was going to be having a visit from the corporate pin-heads, so they wanted it to be sparkling clean.

My manager got me and a guy named Paul to take these TINY brushes, barely bigger than a toothbrush, and go along the base of EVERY shelf throughout the whole store and scrub up the dirt that the big scrubbing machines couldn't reach.

Now, THAT'S NOT THE FUNNY PART, the funny part is that we were making Overtime pay, and I remember Paul & I laughing about how we were making $5.02 per hour!  We thought we were gonna be RICH!  WE WERE SO FULL OF OURSELVES!  Like we were on the "special project" and getting paid by the truckload.  Just Sad.

I also remember the embarassment of having a girl that I kind of had a crush on coming up and talking to me while I was on my knees scrubbing dirt from the floor with a toothbrush

Although actually, I don't recall being as much embarassed as I was excited about the big $5.02 an hour!

Besides babysitting, my first job was bagging groceries at the commissary (which is a military grocery store).  I worked for tips only.  It was a great job.  You showed up and worked for about 3 or 4 hours and made really good money.  They were really flexible with my school schedule and I loved it.  There were always cute guys coming through with maybe a bag of groceries that they needed carried out to their car.  It was the best job I ever had.  I peaked at high school.  Sigh.

Another great memory for me. My first job was at Baskin Robbins. I was not old enough to drive and my older brother and his friends drove me to work for a fee of what else, but ice cream. My boss was a foreigner and was never there. FREE ICE CREAM FOR ALL!

I Had a Death Wish, as my first Job was as a cashier...at Toys'R'Us....At Christmas time...Ugh I had to call the manager for change every 5 minutes, but it would take him 10-15 minutes to respond...if you remember the way the isles were set up, they were in like 15 rows all parallel to each other, & divided into 3 sections, 1rst was usually baby stuff, middle section was usually bikes/power wheels/etc, and the rear section had the brand name action figures/dolls etc...My line usually was backed up halfway through the bike section. I learned more about Power Rangers (Green Ranger Debuted in the original series around this time) and Teacher Barbie w/o panties recalls then I ever wanted to that X-mas.

Thought this would be an interesting thread to resurrect.  I worked at a mattress factory, but can't complain they were paying 4.54 an hour.  I thought I was rich.

My first job was being a janitor at the local library.  My second day on the job a white tail deer jumped through the front plate glass window from the street and ran all around the library.  It knocked down racks, over tables and chairs, plants, and pooped all over the place.  What a mess.  I did such a good job cleaning up that they gave me a raise the 3rd day I was there.  The library has since moved to a bigger building and I think that there is a coffee shop now in its place.

My first job was a summer job working as a landscaper.  They put me in charge of taking care of their showcase house at their retail center.  I was totally out of my element.  Didn't know a thing about plants.  I do remember the pay was pretty good though, like $6.20 an hour or so.  I had to share an equipment bin with one of the other guys there, and one time another guy accused me of stealing his shovels out of his bin.  What an idiot, he was ready to fight me over a shovel!  I also learned how to operate the big backhoe things to load mulch for people, and one time lost control of one of them and almost wiped out a parking lot full of cars!  Don't think $6.20 would've covered that....

My first job was also janitorial. At our school if you did something wrong the punishment would be you had to clean up after school. The Supervisor liked what I was doing and offered me a PAID part time job after school sweeping floors for $2.65 an hour. I was 14 and this eventually moved to summer work painting and stripping and waxing floors. There were three grown ups that I worked with who thought It would be an OK idea if I painted all the high stuff. We used to put books on the staircase so the ladder would be even.

My first job was working  at a movie theatre. At the time, I was looking for any job that I wouldn't have to fling burgers at, and that the job had to have something "in it" for me.  The theatre was perfect.

At the time...I can remember saying "this whole movie theatre thing is great, but I'll probably only be here 2 or 3 years"

That was 11 years ago, and I'm still working for the theatres.   Who would have thought?

I was 16 for my first job because I remember I was so excited to be driving at all, I'd drive to work - which was in the house next to mine. In my defense, we lived in the woods, so it was a real walk and with hours like 6pm to 10pm, I wasn't in the mood to walk back in the pitch black with the bats.

I worked in the basement turned layout facility for a t-shirt print shop... doing lots of designs for local fire departments, mud bogs and school uniforms. I recall using the red corrector pen to write off-color remarks in the shirt numbers of the cheerleaders, passive aggressive geek that I was... Nothing you'd ever see, of course. I blame my actions on a lack of ventilation and lots of rubber cement.

JD-
Do you get a nickel back everytime you recycle a thread?  I think you may have enough to buy yourself one of those mint sundaes you like so much!

My first job was as a lifeguard.  It was cool cause we were never too busy.  We played cards a lot of the time.  I had a really cute co-worker.  I also got to work on my tan.  And chat w/ the older life guards.  Learned a lot those two summers.

My first job was a paperboy, it wasn't great pay or anything but I was like 13 or something so it didn't really matter, It was just a good way to start learning a work ethic, I really enjoyed the job actually, I just go to ride my bike round the village where I used to live and I thought I was pretty good at it too, never got any complaints about missing papers, the only time my round got complaints was when I had to take a day off and some other jerk would do it and miss out houses, that really bugged me, cause the next day I would get angry people telling me that I had missed them yesterday!!!

My first proper 9-5 job was doing pretty much what I do now, graphic design / Mac operator, but the first people I worked for were a publishing company who made Football (soccer) Programmes, you know what proggrames are right? any that was cool, apart from the fact that the teams we worked for were all rivals to my team, ohh well it was still football though, so I enjoyed it.

Man that has too be my longest ever post on the forum!!!

Paperboys Unite!!!  That was my first job at 12.  Delivering the Indianapolis Star.  Nothing like getting up at 4:50am.  I never had a problem with that.  I'm still an early riser.  That was the best job I ever had.  I delivered the papers until I went to college.  I started working at Burger Chef (now Hardee's) flipping burgers my junior year in high school.  Wow. I just realized that I even had two jobs back then.  BC was a good place to work too. The assistant manager would go out and buy us beer.  We'd sit in the store after hours and get a nice buzz.  I still have my name tag, I ran across it the other day.  Oh the memories that are rushing through my head!!!

Let's see...I guess babysitting doesn't really count huh? That is probably the first job for us girls. My first real job was working at a Dairy Queen (ice cream place) while I was in high school.

I did paper boy as well, but it didn't last long enough to count as a job.  My first real gig was bus boy at a country club when I was 15.  I, too, thought my measly pay made me king of the world.  Also, I have been working ever since.  Something we should pass along to our kids!  But that's another thread.

Did it scare you, just like it scrared me, how accurate "Caddyshack" really is!  I thought there was no way a country club was really that crazy.  I was wrong.

Yep, I was a babysitter too!  My first paycheck job was at good ol' McDonalds.  I worked there for 2 months before I got fed up with it.  They lost a couple of my paychecks, a couple of my timecards, and I was written up one time because my drawer was short $20, even though the supervisor was the one using my drawer!  This McDonalds was trying a face to face ordering system (instead of headsets and speakers), which personally I thought was really cool for the customers, but I think they got rid of it because to one wanted to be the person taking the orders.  "Face" was in the back of the restuarant, right next to the warehouse area, so there was no one to talk to and nothing to do between orders.  You weren't supposed to have a radio back there or anything, but I always brought a book back and read during orders.  It was the only part of that job I liked.  When it was busier, I would duck down behind the window, and when the next car came up, I'd pop up.  It scared them about every time.

My next job was at a local craft store doing cleaning and classroom setup.  I stayed there almost 4 years, and when I left, I was managing the internet orders and shipping department.
