Sorry LS, but I'm not a fan of any country music even though I know there's some artists that have gone more "pop" with their sound.  I just can't get over all the years of listening to the "twang" when I was growing up.  It completely turned me off from that genre of music.  cry

I feel ya Ghost.

It took me YEARS to appreciate Country music again.  Growing up I HATED it because of the twangy sound.

But in the late 90's I started to come around to it, mostly because of Shania, Faith, Martina and LeAnn smile.gif

Now I even like an OCCASIONAL twangy one

I know more country artists by sight than I do pop and rock. My wife is into country and she turns to CMT and GAC a lot.

Not saying you hafta like her, but to not recognize her is something different all together. I'm no fan of Mariah Carey, but I knows her when I seesd her. But I'll stop giving you a hard time, what with it being your birthday and all. biggrin.gif

You would be surprised at the number of famous people I wouldn't recognize.  I'm terrible when it comes to putting a name with a face.

I also know a ton of music, but pop out a song title and ask me who it's by, and most likely I couldn't tell you.  That most definitely earns me a big old no.gif!!  hmm

I'm the same way, GD. I enjoy listening to music, but really don't care who's in the band, who wrote the song, or much of anything about the who's involved . . . I just like listening to it.

But you're a musican, Web. If you worked out a song, and a really cool bass part, and you performed it well, wouldn't it bother you to know that no one in the audience cared? I mean, this stuff comes from amazing peoples' talented arms, legs & vocal chords. And in the case of the mighty songwriter, it comes from their heads. Their amazing heads. I mean, one moment we don't have this gem, and then the next - some brilliant person has created a masterpiece out of thin air, and now we'll never be the same! To me, this is the single most important thing in the world!

You know, putting it that way, it probably wouldn't bother me as long as the audience enjoyed the music.  I would think it would be more about the music than the recognition.

Back to the main topic, I didn't recognize her either.  I'm not big into country music, so I did a Google picture search, and I recognize her pictures there.  Just the one on the home page doesn't look as much like her as I as a non-country fan am used to seeing.

Thats probably not a good question for me because where and why I play my music is not about my recognition.

At home, I play and practice for me because I enjoy it. I usually play with headphones on so I don't bother the rest of the family with my noise. I'm quite content playing with no one listening or caring because its for me.

At church, I play as an act of worship and to help others worship through music. When I'm playing in public, I hope that I'm not being noticed. If I'm standing out, then I'm doing something wrong because in the context where I play, its not about me. What makes me feel the best, is when I'm playing and I look out and see someone totally lost in worship. They are not caring about, or noticing my bass line, they are just hearing the music and using that as an enhancement to their worship . . . thats when I know I'm doing my job right.

I really don't care if I get recognition for my music because thats not why I do what I do. I know thats not the same situation as what we listen to for entertainment, but its my answer to the direct question.

I know people that are deeply into sports. They can tell you stats about every player on every team. To them, its something very important. I can watch and enjoy a football game without knowing or caring how many touchdown passes the quarterback has thrown this season. Not knowing who he's married to now or how much money his contract is for this year has no impact on my enjoyment of the game.

I guess I just have a similar perspective on music. I can enjoy the music without knowing those things about the artist, the group, or the writer.

In some cases, I can know too much and it can take away from my enjoyment of a song. I'm typically a judgmental person which is my own problem and I deal with that on a daily basis. But because of that, there have been times where I've enjoyed the musical content of a song and then later found out what the writer intended it to really mean, or the conditions he/she wrote the song under. I could have happily went on enjoying the song for the music, but later have trouble getting past my own judgments of its intended meaning or the artist's life style at the time he/she wrote it.

I drive on concrete streets every day. I appreciate that I don't have to drive in mud and dust. concrete was a brilliant creation. I'm glad the concrete is there and I can appreciate it even though I don't know who invented it.

In the same way, I can listen to, enjoy, and appreciate a song even though I don't know the personal details behind the artist.

But Web - If you feel that way, why do you post pictures of your impressive woodworking?

I post pictures because I know there are people here that care about me, are interested in what I'm doing, and who want to get to know me better. Its not about "showing off how good I am", its about "who I am" and what I'm doing today. I don't go around to other forums and post pictures of my work to try to get people to praise me. I post pictures here to share that part of my life with people I consider friends.

Sure, if someone is impressed with something I've created, that feels good. But, I don't expect them to want, or care to know details about my life, woodworking history, or to want to see the plans I drew up just because they were impressed with something I built.

I'm certainly not saying the details are not, or should not be important. I'm just saying that not knowing the details does not impact my enjoyment of the music.

I've enjoyed your 10 degrees shows. I find it interesting to listen to how the things connect together with people and I'm impressed with your knowledge of those facts. I thank you for putting all the information together for us and I know it takes time and effort to do that. Although I enjoy listening to it, and appreciate what you do for us, there are things in my life that I am more interested in spending my time on then researching the facts and the people behind the music for myself. Because you are here and share with us, that helps me expand my knowledge of these things that I wouldn't research on my own.

Personally, I'm kind of glad that we are not all the same and that what interests each of us most is not the same for everyone. I think it would be pretty boring if we all knew the same stuff and sat around sharing what everyone else already knew.

It's interesting to me, because I have to wonder what drew you personally to art & music rather than football & concrete pouring, as you'd mentioned. Must be some sort of inspiration there, I'd think--

I've played football and poured concrete too. Football hurts. Concrete is a lot of hard, boring work.

Why I started playing bass and why I don't commit the name of Green Day's bassist and other facts about his life to my memory are two very different questions.

In grade school, my mom made me take piano lessons. I enjoyed playing the piano, but I hated trying to learn to read music. I would stumble through a song a few times until I could figure out how it was supposed to sound and would then just play by ear until it sounded right. Once I was given the choice to stop lessons, to me that meant not having to learn how to read music any more, so I quit. Little did I know at the time that I would use what I did know at a later time.

Some 30 years later, I started learning to play bass on somewhat of a whim. I've always liked the bass. I just like the sound of it. When I'm listening to music, the bass line is what stands out to me. If I hum along with a song, the bass line is what I hum, or create. It has always been this way for me. I didn't even realize or think about that until a few years ago.

A couple years before I started, I would have this fleeting thought once in a while ... "If I was to try to learn to play any instrument, I think it would be the bass."

Gradually that turned into "I wonder if I could learn how play?" That became an internal challenge. At that time, I was inspired by no one, just a desire and challenge to learn how to do something that I've enjoyed listening to for a long time.

My wife was asking me what I wanted or needed for Christmas a few years ago. I said "You're gonna think I'm crazy, but I'm thinking I'd like to see if I can learn how to play bass." She was a little surprised, but thought it would be good for me to try, so I got a cheaper "starter" bass for Christmas that year.

It may be boring, but that is how I got into it. It was not that I heard a particular bassist that stood out to me that made me think "I want to be like him!". It was because I became interested in learning how to play the instrument.

I still don't read music very well, but I learned I don't have to. The sheet music we use always has the guitar chords written on it. That chord notation gives me the root note to the chord. That gives me a starting point and from there, I can do pretty much whatever I want that sounds good. One of the things I love about the bass is that I don't have to read and play the music as written. I can create and play what I want and as long as it sounds good, no one else cares if I'm playing the notes as written or not (unlike my music teacher). That fits perfectly to the way I remember feeling when trying to learn to play the piano as a kid.

Now, since I've been playing, I often find myself listening to music in a different way. Instead of just humming along with the bass line, I'm listening to it in a more technical, and detailed way while trying to visualize what exactly the bassist is doing. I do appreciate a talented bassist much more than I ever did before, but to me, its still not about the bassist or his personal life, its about the music.

When a bassist inspires me, its not a feeling of "I want to be just like him" its more "That sounded really neat, I want to learn how to do what he just did". At that point, its a matter of trying to learn the technique he used, not what he looks like, or that his cousin plays drums in another band.

There are some bass players that amaze me. I will never be able to play like Stanley Clarke or Victor Wooten . . . I don't expect to, or even think I ever could play like them. Although I appreciate and am awed by their talent and abilities, that is not what drives me to want to become a better player, or to even play at all . . . that comes from within.

Very cool - Thanks for all the typing. I've heard so many musicians say that they hated their childhood piano lessons as kids for the very same reason. But each & every one of them is glad they took some piano lessons, because it was such a helpful base for the instrument they're playing now. I'd guess that only a handful of rock musicians out there can read music well, if at all. I think it's interesting to know that you started playing late in life. (I just assumed you'd been playing forever.)
