Looking for advice on Memphis.....

My wife and I are headed to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl (Unversity of Central Floria - UCF vs. Mississippi Sate) in late December. Having never been there, I'm looking for advice on places to go, things to do and places to eat. Looking for off the beaten path kinda places and THE big tourist attraction kinda things. I seem to recall someone was there not too long ago....

I know I'll need to walk on Beale, ten feet off of the ground.....

Say Hi to Marie! smile.gif

Johnny Rivers

MEMPHIS
(C. Berry)

Long distance information give me Memphis, Tennessee
Help me find the party that tried to get in touch with me
She could not leave a number but I know who placed the call
'cause my uncle took a message and he wrote it on the wall

Help me information get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd call me here from Memphis, Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on the ridge
Just a half-a-mile from the Mississippi bridge

Last time I saw Marie she was wavin' me goodbye
With "hurry home" drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
But we were pulled apart because her Mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home in Memphis, Tennessee

Help me information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
Marie is only six years old, information please
Try to put me through to her in Memphis, Tennessee

There's a lot of cool things to do in Memphis! What are your interests? Music history? The blues experience? Elvis? Oh I can tell you TONS! laughing.gif I love that city.

When you are at Graceland keep a careful lookout for toenails in the carpet. Not too long ago someone auctioned off what was believed to be Elvis's toenail for like $10,000.00. nod.gif

It's sad that someone would believe that, since you would hope they've vacumned the carpet at least once or twice since Elvis died!...but you never know....weirdface

laughing.gif You're not far off the mark JD. If you are in the Memphis airport, you can experience what is concerned one of the best BBQs in the city - Interstate BBQ. What was novel for me about it was that the pulled pork sandwiches - something pilots swear by - is made with coleslaw right on the bun. That's not something we do here in Wisconsin as a rule.

The absolute must dining experiences in Memphis are all about the BBQ. The most reknown is Charlie Vergo's Rendezvous - it is on a short street a couple blocks from Beale Street that looks like a dingy alley.

The Rum Boogie is pretty well known for their Southern dishes, and people love going there to have some good food, hear some Memphis blues, and see all the music collectibles on display. The Rum Boogie has guitars and posters form many famous musicians...I think I posted a couple pics awhile back.

That's all about food, but I certainly will share more about things to do in Memphis with you SG.

Hey SG, here's some more info for you...

There's a trolley that runs through a chunk of downtown, and it costs $1 per ride. If you are staying along that stretch, it is very convenient and comfortable. It's a great way to get to Beale Street from some of the hotels.

If you like the music or the novelty of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Elvis, go see Gary Hardy and The Memphis 2 at Blues City Cafe. They put on a good show and have personal history with these performers and many other great bands that they share in their performance, and it doesn't cost anything to walk in and see them. If you happen to see Gary, tell him Heather from Harley-Davidson sends him holiday greetings! By the way, Gary is the man who saved Sun Records and is an anchor of the community. He actually has a story about meeting U2 when they came to record their song for BB King.

The Stax Museum and Sun Records are way cool - awesome pieces of music history. Stax is the home of soul and funk and they have Isaac Hayes caddy on show! Sun Records was the home of the Million Dollar Quartet. There's also the Gibson Guitar Factory just off Beale Street. There's a bus that runs from the Beale Street area that takes you from one tour location to another, inclusing to Graceland, and you can get schedules from most anyplace in the area.

If you want to put together a tour experince, look up Backbeat Tours: http://www.backbeattours.com/. These were put together by some of the men that helped shape music history in Memphis and some of them still conduct the tours.

A few more things:

I really liked the Memphis Zoo - the layout is incredible and the panda exhibit was impressive.

The Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art is awe inspiring.

On Beale Street there are some must-see things for tourists: go talk to the old guy that runs the music store, shop Tater Reds for a voodoo token, have a drink on the street (because you can) and visit BB Kings.

The National Civil Rights Museum, located where the Lorraine Hotel still stands in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is a great multicultural experience.

The Rock 'n' Soul Museum is near Beale Street and is a great way to experience a comprehensive music history. I spent hours there!

And a couple websites I used to research before I went: http://www.memphistravel.com/thingstodo.asp
http://www.bealestreet.com/clubs.html

Have fun - it is a great city!
