Best Performance at Live Aid

Do you recall the summer Saturday in 1985 when Live Aid was broadcast? (That is now almost 20 yrs ago!! yeeeesh!!) What was the best performance/song that day, or who was your favorite performer?

While I was completely astounded and won over by Queen's "One Vision" and "Radio Gaga", the way the crowd and Freddie Mercury were so into it, I'd have to say the best of the day was U2's "Bad". I recall Bono leaping down into the crowd to find girls to dance with, and me yelling (encouragingly, at the tv) "You are NOT supposed to do that!! You are insane!! This song rocks!! U2 is the best!! You are breaking the rules, you are NOT SUPPOSED TO GO INTO THE CROWD!!"

I had been big U2 fan from a few years earlier since seeing their performance at Red Rocks on MTV, but this performance sealed it. Best band in the world.

I liked Duran Duran, but I was bias. If I remember correctly though, didn't Phil Collins play two times, in two different countries? If this is the correct venue, then that would be the best for me, he is awesome, even now!

A - I so agree with you.  I loved the Duran Duran one, but I'm biased, too.  We didn't see it live.  We saw it on video tape about 2 weeks later.  I glossed over everyone, but Duran Duran.  I was very singleminded in my devotion.

So do you two Duranies have their new CD?  Just curious as to what you think about the new stuff. I was a fan of their music too although I suspect you liked more than just their music.

Yes, Phil Collins did a few solo songs on piano in England, and then it was big news that he was boarding a Concord jet (RIP) to the States to play that evening. (Does anyone remember where the Live Aid in the US was held? RFK stadium in Washington, DC maybe?)

But the thing was, Phil did the same 3 songs both times!

I have not listened to the whole thing yet.  I (legally) downloaded the song "Reach Up (For The Sunrise)", but I have not bought the album yet.  I guess I shouldn't gripe about Walmart not carrying the new release right away if I don't buy it when they get it, but I saw that they have it bundled with a DVD and I'm waiting for the bundle to get to Walmart.  It's only a few dollars more to buy them both, so I'm waiting.  I love the new song.  I'm so glad to see them working with all five of the originals.  I have been a fan for over 20 years.  I was 11 when I started my obsession.  Cabbage Patch kids were all the rage at that time and I reregistered my twins as Nigel John and Nicholas James and reregistered my preemie as Roger Simon Andrew.  I had a stuffed bear that was Simon Le Bear.  I was convinced that I would have twin boys (preferrably with John Taylor) named Nicholas James Simon and Nigel John Scott.  Yeah.  Well, that didn't happen.  Ahhh...the dreams of childhood.  Of course, when I was in my later teens I loved the name Raven.  I wanted to name my daughter Raven Simone (like the little girl from The Cosby Show).  The only problem was that my first MAJOR real person crush was on a guy with the last name Looney.  I should have known it wouldn't work.  Naming your child Raven Looney is cruel, even for someone like me.

I love the new song too but don't have the new CD yet either.  I have it on my Christmas list - hopefully Santa will bring it when he drops off my son's goodies.

Seven and the Ragged Tiger is still one of my all-time favorite albums - of course, I have it on CD now.

Sorry to hear things did not work out with you and John Taylor.ha!ha!

Hey Trish,

With you having a kid, you'd be a good person to ask this question.

You mentioned cabbage patch kids, I was talking with a friend of mine a few days ago and we were noting the fact that it doesn't seem like there are any Christmas toy fads like there were in the 80's.

I mean, growing up, it seemed like every year there was just a MUST HAVE toy that seemingly took the nation by storm.  Be it the Rubiks Cube, Cabbage Patch Kids, Trivial Pursuit, Furbie, etc.

But when we wondered if maybe it's just because we're older now and don't have kids, that maybe we simply don't notice the big toy fads.

Have there been any of them lately, or would you agree that for whatever reason that no longer seems to happen?

THey still have them.  The Tickle Me Elmo was HUGE.  I tried for weeks to find one for my son.  No go.  There were actually fights in the stores over them.  Last year was the Rapunzel Barbie.  I never did get one for my daughter and they didn't come out with more.  She just lost out.  I didn't see that one coming.  It's not like it was in the 80's.  I think it's because there is such a vast amount of toys out there.  There is just so much to choose from.
