#386 - The White Stripes - Elephant (12/11/07)

Rolling Stone calls this the 386'th best album of all time because...

Jack and Meg White's minimalist garage rock proves it has more depth and power than their more optimistic critics expected.  On tracks like the slow-burning "Seven Nation Army" and "The Hardest Button To Button" Jack White's songwriting talent finally matches his blues fan-boy, art-school shtick.

Alright.  I own two White Stripes CD's, including this one I believe, but have never listened to them.

I think I saw them on a late night talk show and was unimpressed with their sound.  Too loud, to obnoxious.  But when the Rolling Stone magazine describes songs as "slow burning" and says the songwriter has a "blues fan-boy" schtick it makes me wonder if I've made a mistake in completely ignoring them.

Later today I may dig out a few of the above mentioned songs and give em' a spin on the air.

I like the White Stripes enough, but again, not enough to buy an album. They're another one that had the fame curse, my local radio station played one of their songs way too much. They're also one where I may like a song and just not realize who the artist is.

I'm just surprised to hear them described as garage rock. I REALLY thought they bordered on heavy metal or punk, so I ignored them.

Then, like I said, I saw them on Letterman or something and the song really annoyed me, so I never looked at them any further.

Last year Primal Scream had a hit with "Country Girl". To this day that's one of my favorite new songs and I never would have given it a chance if I didn't have to add it to the station because it was an AC Hit. I just figured a band I never heard of with a name like Primal Scream would be louder music than I care for.

I guess I'll have to start giving every artist at least a 3 song listen before dismissing them.

Yeah, I'd call the White Stripes garage rock. I don't think I'd classify them as heavy metal or punk. In fact, if they were, I might like them better.

They never moved me much, but I liked Jack's Loretta Lynn project. And I love that Raconteurs song!

I like the stripes- I think Jack White is a very talented singer and musician. Instinct Blues is one of the best songs I've heard out of "newer" artists in a long time. I'd say even Muddy Waters would have to tip his hat at that one...smile.gif

I know that I like something from The White Stripes but I have no idea what it is. SO I guess they are hit or miss with me.
