For Those of us in Digital Printing and Publication

This made my day....

Did you know tht there were 3.5 trillion pages printed in North America in 2005, and only 10% of those pages were printed digitally? And only 4% of those digital pages were printed in color! But by 2015, the share of digital pages will grow to 25% and the number of color pages will continue to grow. Digital color printing is the fastest growing market.

Actually, our shop is an offset shop, so I don't necessarily want to hear that! Though I think we really need to get some digital presses in there.

oooph!
well for what its worth, last year this company bought a company to add offset capabilities, and they just bought a new offset press. I don't think that'll be going away. offset color quality completely rocks and thus far I think digital can't hold the quality for large print runs...at least not yet.

Well, and digital can't beat the price of large offset print runs, nor the speed. I think it really depends on the type of printing you're doing.

heck yea!
In some cases, depending on quantity, we're getting 35 cents AN IMAGE!! ashamed. Don't think we've gone too much lower than that for big (relatively) runners- 30 cents maybe?

I don't do much of the pricing, but I can't imagine we're much different. I do the graphic design, and ad specialties, so I can get you the price on some pencils, but not on a print job. Not that I really mind, I think the ad specialties stuff is so much easier to price.

Personally, I've been working with Xerox/Xerographic imaging since 1982 and still don't think it carries the same "quality" that offset does. Offset is much more archival. You can print digital (xerographics) on offset but, you cannot print digital on to digital. The heat and pressure of the machines "destroys" the paper product. Moisture content, grain, everything about the paper has been altered. (and adultered!)
Offset allows for special finishes like laquers and satins. Six and (I think) 8 color printing is mind blowing.
Maybe we should have stuck with the mimeograph machines? (they always smelled yummy)biggrin.gifcry.gif

It really depends on what "digital" means. Computer to print on a press, using ink? or melted plastic on paper?
