#375 - Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park (12/22/07)

Rolling Stone says:

When he started out, he was the pimp's main prophet.  Springsteen's opening shot dazzled with rapid-fire, poetic street jive.  "Blinded By The Light", "Spirit In The Night" and "Grown Up" are R&B folk songs populated by a cast of gypsies, tramps and theives.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bruce Springsteen's debut album found him squarely in the tradition of Bob Dylan: folk-based tunes arranged for an electric band featuring piano and organ (plus, in Springsteen's case, 1950s-style rock & roll tenor saxophone breaks), topped by acoustic guitar and a husky voice singing lyrics full of elaborate, even exaggerated imagery.

But where Dylan had taken a world-weary, cynical tone, Springsteen was exuberant. His street scenes could be haunted and tragic, as they were in "Lost in the Flood," but they were still imbued with romanticism and a youthful energy. Asbury Park painted a portrait of teenagers ****sure of themselves, yet bowled over by their discovery of the world.

It was saved from pretentiousness (if not preciousness) by its sense of humor and by the careful eye for detail that kept even the most high-flown language rooted. Like the lyrics, the arrangements were busy, but the melodies were well developed and the rhythms, pushed by drummer Vincent Lopez, were breakneck.

I had no idea this album was his first, although I knew it was an old one. I've never listened to it and always assumed it was a live album. I guess that's why I figured it wasn't his first one.

I like Springsteen, but not too much at one time.

My high school English teacher was crazy about Bruce Springsteen. He was always telling us that his songs had such deep meaning. He would have us write long papers about what each song meant. Unfortunately, that has ruined Bruce Springsteen for mehmm

I like this album a lot. Just because Springsteen is such a kid!!! He's in the early stages of forming and defining his sound- some with success, others are completely forgettable. But you see that flicker of brilliance that was just looking to be ignited on subsequent albums.

I always had my songs by Springsteen that I liked enough- 10th Ave Freeze Out, Jungleland, but that Born in the USA album really just sickened me after awhile with its being overplayed back in the 80s.

What really got my back into looking at his work again was the HBO conert Live in NYC from a few years ago. That is brilliant from first note to last! Not too much can get me out of my seat and grooving. That does. By god does he own that crowd!!!

I think one thing about Springsteen is that even if he weren't a singer, leader of his band, song writer...he'd still be an awesome lead guitarist in just about any band he wanted to be in. I love his guitar playing when he solos!! He gets some sounds out of that guitar that just are otherworldly...sometimes it sounds like a car skidding, othertimes like a jack-hammer, the fury is amazing. There is a live version of Born in the USA out there that made me like the song again (after being killed by radio). The solo is just from another world. completely. It sounds like a demon from hell is trying to break through the bottom of the stage, or like an engine exploding or something!!!

the man is A-1 in my book.smile.gif Up there with my Stones!!smile.gif
