Just call me Captain Green!

I've replaced every single lightbulb with those squiggly florescents.

I've turned off four of my five computers and use a flat panel monitor which uses 20% of the electricity of a normal one.

I've kept my heat at 58 degrees at night and 65 during the day.

I've unplugged items that I'm not using, even if they weren't on.

I've trained myself to not leave lights or other electical items on in rooms I'm not in.

I've converted to using a toaster oven instead of a regular over for 90% of my meals.

The result?  My last two electric bills have been lower than any I've had in the last three years!  (that's as far back as the electric company goes).

In fact, my heating bill average is $60, which is $100 LESS than most homes my size!

WOO HOO!!!  clap.gif

Saving money AND the planet all at the same time!  Where's Al Gore?  I'm sure he'd wanna give me a big ol' hug!  clap.gif

Well, I gotta admit it's more about saving money than it is saving the earth. But I'm glad that I can do both at once smile.gif

Yeah, they're supposed to last 10 times longer and use 20% of the energy of a normal bulb.  What's not to like?

I even like the light they give off.  At first it's a yellowish tinted light, but after about a minute it's a very intense white light that makes things look more vivid.

Originally the cost per bulb was a bit high, but now you can get a 8 pack of 60 watt comparibles for $10 or a 6 pack of 100 watt comparibles for $12.  That's not bad at all.

We have started to change to the new green bulbs as we run out of the old ones. And they are nice.

And my Prius has saved me a TON of gas money!

Ooh, I almost forgot another area I'm green in. Water consumption.

Instead of throwing out 6 - 8 plastic water bottles a day I get my water delivered in 5 gallon refillable barrels, so I only throw out 1 water bottle a week!

Seriously. Shouldn't I be getting some kind of award by now? weirdface.gif

Glad that your efforts have saved you quite a bit of money JR!!  Now you know why moms yell at their kids all the time to turn the lights off when they're not in a room.  smile

That's my next move.  My mini-van gets 18 to the gallon.  I would LOVE to switch to a Prius

Oh yeah, and close the door when you go outside!  We're not heating/air conditioning the neighborhood!  (that was a big one in my house)

It is, but they say it's still not as good as just not using them to begin with.  Because the bottles are produced in factories that emit pollution, and supposedly creating plastic uses oil somehow.

I always sing the "Energy" song from Schoolhouse Rocks - "So don't be cross when mama says turn that extra light out / Turn it out till we find a fuel that never runs out."
The 70's were so green!

As a volunteer at Wehr Nature Center in Franklin, I've been demonstrating how effective those "squiggly" bulbs are for almost 15 years at Irish Fest (that's a green fest, fer sheer!) They call it the "Energy Cycle" It uses the generator from an old Volkswagon belted to a ten speed bike. A panel of capacitors holds a low charge until someone starts peddling the bike. Several outlets on the board are used to power a small b/w television, fan, blow dryer and then, there is the light bulbs... 5 incandesent, 5 squiggly. The people try as hard as they can to power the incandesent. Most can't. Then, I switch them to the flourescent. Incandesent use 90 percent of the energy just to heat the bulb. Only 10 percent of all the juice actually goes to illuminating the bulb. Squigs are just the opposite. I make the women peddle the fan which has no heat element. Then, I switch to the blow dryer (1100 Watt) the heat element makes it very difficult to peddle.

That's my two and a half cents.

I think you can see other people's versions of the energy cycle if you search.

Filtered tap water. The filter can do up to 5000 gallons. I also ride my bike to work. (balances the 1960 Olds chowing 12 MPG)furious.gif
