I was on the phone talking with my cousin last night when he heard 8 gunshots followed about half a minute later by a single gunshot.

He went to his porch as cop cars were coming, the shooting took place near the corner where his house is.  Over half a dozen cop cars plus some emergency medical vehicles.

The paper had this in it today...

Teen shot five times on south side

An 18-year-old man remains in critical but stable condition today after being shot five times on the Milwaukee's south side last night.

Police are seeking two suspects in connection with the shooting, which occurred about 9:20 p.m. in the 2300 block of W. Burnham Ave.

Investigators do not yet know the motive for the shooting.

The funny thing is he's wanted to move out of that crappy neighborhood for years but has struggled with the decision.  He knows it's not safe, but because he lives there his mother (my grandma) can stay in the house she's lived in for 60 years.  She doesn't want to move.  To her the neighborhood is just fine because she never leaves the house.

My cousin was supposed to put in an offer for a nice condo in a great neighborhood this morning and he was saying the past week that he wished he'd just get a sign so he knew what the right thing to do was.

I told him he couldn't wait for a sign.

I know.

Only 25 years ago my cousin and I would play out in that neighborhood past dark.  We'd be out all day and there was never anything to be afraid of.

Now it's probably the second or third worst area in the city.  We almost fear going down there for Christmas and other holidays at my Grandmas house.

Personally I hope they get out of there, but it all depends on what happens with my cousin's house hunt.  He's gotta do what's best for him.

 EVERY holiday I drive down there, or every Saturday when I go down to get my Grandma (I take her and my Mom to church) I'm thinking how I can't wait to not have to ever go into that area again.

It sounds like you live here in Saginaw, JR.  Almost the entire city is now unsafe due to shootings all the time.  There are many, many areas I won't venture into anymore.  The neighborhood I grew up in is now over-run with gang members and drug dealers.  All of the places I used to go to when I was a kid are now too dangerous for anyone to enjoy.  We're planning to leave Saginaw when my husband retires, but that's another 3 years away.  We may be moving up to our cottage a lot sooner than we had planned.  hmm
