R.I.P. Roy Scheider

While I liked Jaws, I really liked him in "All That Jazz".  I didn't know he was 75.  Time sure does fly by.

Jaws' actor Scheider dies at 75

By JILL ZEMAN, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Roy Scheider, a two-time Oscar nominee best known for his role as a police chief in the blockbuster movie "Jaws," has died. He was 75.

Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, hospital spokesman David Robinson said. The hospital did not release a cause of death.

However, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital's Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the past two years.

He was nominated for an Oscar for best-supporting actor in 1971's "The French Connection" in which he played the police partner of Oscar winner Gene Hackman and for best-actor for 1979's "All That Jazz," the autobiographical Bob Fosse film.

However, he was best known for his role in Steven Spielberg's 1975 film, "Jaws," the enduring classic about a killer shark terrorizing beachgoers and well as millions of moviegoers.

Widely hailed as the film that launched the era of the Hollywood blockbuster, it was also the first movie to earn $100 million at the box office. Scheider starred with Richard Dreyfuss, who played an oceanographer.

In 2005, one of Scheider's most famous lines in the movie "You're gonna need a bigger boat" was voted No. 35 on the American Film Institute's list of best quotes from U.S. movies.

That year, some 30 years after "Jaws" premiered, hundreds of movie buffs flocked to Martha's Vineyard, off the southeastern coast of Massachusetts, to celebrate the great white shark.

The island's JawsFest '05 also brought back some of the cast and crew, including screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel that inspired Spielberg's classic. Spielberg, Scheider and Dreyfuss were absent.

Scheider was also politically active. He participated in rallies protesting U.S. military action in Iraq, including a massive New York demonstration in March 2003 that police said drew 125,000 chanting activists.

Yeah that movie sure put the fear of sharks into all of us!  I remember when this movie first came out and I took my brother to go see it.  When he went to sleep that night, he had a nightmare about sharks eating him.  My two brothers shared a room at the time, and he was beating the crap out of my other brother with a pillow trying to fend off the sharks that were after him.  laughing.gif  Needless to say, I caught heck from my mom for taking him to see a movie like that at his age.  ashamed

Aw heck, after seeing Jaws I was afraid to go in a lake or a pool for nearly a year! rofl.gif It was awful - swimming was an almost daily activity during the summer in my family. I was terrified, especially if a fish or lake weeds brushed my feet.

I learned to water ski at a real young age, and my cousins who were a few years older than me would say stuff like "there are northern and muskie in here bigger than you that will bite your toes off if you wipe out by the island..." that freaked me out as much as jaws being in the ocean.smile.gif

then there was that "you know, some wierdos let pirranahs out in the lakes up here....."smile.gif

Well, they just might bite your toes off JD!!  Those big Northerns and Muskies got some big, sharp teeth in their mouths.  I won't take those off my line when I catch one.  If no one is around to do it for me, I just cut the line and let the fish swim away with the hook still in it's mouth.  hmm

I never understood why people liked fishing for Northerns and Muskies other than the fact that they are big fish. They have nasty teeth and they are way too boney to make them worth the effort to prepare them for eating in my opinion. I caught a Northern once and just gave it away because cleaning and preparing it was such a PIA proposition. bleh

My thoughts exactly G-gal.  They are a lot of fun to catch, but I'd much rather put them back in the lake for someone else to catch.  And truthfully, they don't really taste all that good.  If you eat a Walleye, then eat a Pike right after it, you'll never eat another Pike because they taste a lot different.

I'm worried about making a good catch at the fish counter at the store than from a lake.smile.gif

Aw, there's no fun in that JD.  I love fishing and find it a very relaxing thing to do. There's nothing like being out in a boat on a lake with a fishing rod in one hand and a cold drink in the other.  Gives me time to ponder the bigger things in life.  smile

75? I had no clue he was that old. But I really liked him as an actor. Anyone remember SeaQuest? I loved that show when it was on. But I got some episodes and DVD, and now I remember how hokey it was. But I still like it!

I think he was in a movie called the Seven Ups around 1971 that was a good one.
