This Day In Music

On This Day:

1980, Bon Scott, singer from AC/DC was pronounced dead on arrival at a London hospital after a heavy night's drinking. Scott was found in the passenger seat of a friend's parked car. The official coroner's report stated that he had "Drunk himself to death" after suffocating on his own vomit.

1988, Kylie Minogue was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'I Should Be So Lucky.' Minogue had become a household name playing Charlene Ramsey in Australian soap Neighbours. After every major UK record company turned down the track, producer Pete Waterman released the single on his PWL label. Kylie has gone on to score another 25 top 30 hit singles.

2003, 100 people died after pyrotechnics ignited a club during a gig by Great White in West Warwick, Rhode Island. Great White singer Ty Longley was also killed in the accident. Two brothers who owned the club were charged, along with the former tour manager with involuntary manslaughter. Foam soundproofing material at the edge of the stage set alight and the blaze spread quickly in the one-storey wooden building as fans all tried to escape through the same exit. Great White began a tour in July 2003 to raise money for the survivors and families of victims.

Some birthdays: Famous stars born today include: Buffy Sainte-Marie, wrote 'Up Where We Belong'. J Geils, guitarist with The J. Geils Band, (1982 US No.1 & UK No.3 single 'Centerfold'), Walter Becker from Steely Dan, Randy California, guitarist, singer with Spirit, Neil Primrose, drummer with Travis, ('Why Does It Always Rain On Me'), Brian Littrell, singer from Backstreet Boys and Volkova Olegovna, singer with Tatu.

Things you didnt know about Kurt Cobain
Born on this day in 1967, Kurt Cobain, guitarist and singer with Nirvana.

The bands 1991 album 'Nevermind' spent over two years on the UK chart and was a US No.1 album in 1992.

The idea for the front cover shot of the 'Nevermind' album came about after Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl saw a TV documentary on water babies. Several babies were used for the shoot; five-month old Spencer Eldons photo came out best.

In 1991, Nirvana recorded a performance for BBC TVs Top Of The Pops in London. When asked to lip-sync Smells Like Teen Spirit to a pre-recorded tape Kurt Cobain protested by singing in a low-pitched funny voice with the rest of the band not even trying to mime in-time to the track.

At the time when Nevermind was released in 1991, Kurt was living in his car.

Cobain was found dead on April 5th 1994. His death was officially ruled a suicide by self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. Since then, the circumstances surrounding his death have fueled much analysis and debate.

Kurt Cobain was cremated at the Bleitz Funeral Home, Seattle. The death certificate listed Cobain's occupation as Poet/Musician and his type of business as Punk Rock.

In 2006, Forbes.com revealed that Kurt Cobain had overtaken Elvis Presley as the highest earning dead celebrity. Cobain's work earned $50m (£27m) in the 12 months to October 2006, compared with Presley's $42m (£22m).

I used to think Crystal Gayle was singing Don't take my house away instead of half the way.
