This is 2 blocks from my house....

I didn't know her well, but she was really a nice lady...

UPDATE: Dead woman was bartender
The woman found dead at a west side tavern this afternoon was a longtime employee there, said patrons who knew her.

As police investigated the scene at Coop's Tiny Tap, 5501 W. Vliet St., where the 58-year-old victim was discovered by a vendor about 1:20 p.m. today, patrons at the Wonder Bar across the street talked about the possible fate of the bartender they knew as Pam.

"I'm anxious to find out what happened," said Andrew Lloyd, 47. "She was the neighborhood bartender who had a smile and a laugh all the time."

Debbie Huff, 42, said she was on her way to Coop's about 1: 30 p.m. when she saw a firetruck and some police cars out front, and decided to come back later. But when she heard about Pam from other people, she came to the Wonder Bar.

"I just can't believe this is happening right now," Huff said. "When you'd walk in, if it was crowded, she'd find a chair for you. She was always happy to see you and she was a great person. It's not fair. Everyone loved her.''

Amber Edmonds, 24, said she was former co-worker of Pam's at the Tiny Tap. "She wouldn't have ever fought back. She was very relaxed, very happy go lucky."

Her husband David Edmonds, 31, said he'd been coming to the bar about a year and said, "It's a shock to have this happen."

He said Coop's is like Cheers, the bar from the popular TV show. "Everyone knows your name when you come in," he said, and called Pam "a wonderful woman. If you had a bad day and came in here with a frown on your face, she'd say something to make you smile."

"This isn't just a bar to us," he said. "For someone to come in here and commit this kind of violence is just stupid."

The owner and manager of Coop's Tiny Tap was talking with police investigators, and a man who identified himself as the victim's son showed up at the scene around 5 p.m.

Milwaukee Police Lt. William Jessup said Coop's usually opens about the time the victim was discovered, but said it was unclear whether Coop's had opened for business at the time the vendor arrived.

Homicide reported on west side
Police report a homicide on Milwaukee's west side.

Anne E. Schwartz, spokeswoman for the Milwaukee Police Department, said a 58-year-old woman was found dead in Coop's Tiny Tap, 5501 W. Vliet St., at about 1:30 p.m. A male employee of the bar came in to do some work and found the body, Schwartz said.

Police are still investigating the manner of death, said Schwartz.

If the woman's death is confirmed as a homicide, it would be the 11th in Milwaukee this year, compared with 16 at this time last year, according to police.

they've got surveylance tape of the masked punk who did it. Hope they can find him.

here is the 10 oclock new report on it. In it, you see my car (the only on it) drive by. I had just heard the news and was heading out for the evening and drove past. All sorts of news crews, police tape and detectives there at 10 at night still.

that david guy is a bartender there as well, I was thinking how upset he might have been.

it really bothers me. stuff like that just does not happen on THIS side of town. thats why the mayor and alderman murphy were out there soon after. Its just a big shock, unlike some other parts of town where crap like that happens more frequently. Not to diminish any crime like that anywhere, but its really that feeling of "not in my backyard" "not in my neighborhood" "not here" being gone.

I see the occasional detective car circling around my block today and heading up towards the bar. I also drove past again on my way to Walgreens. There are a bunch of big teddy bears out front.

This was a place I liked to go to occasionally on summer nights after grilling out for a bloody mary. Its really small but just a nice neighborhood place. More than a few times when doing laundry downstairs, I'd not have enough quarters, so I'd head up to Tiny Tap to get a tapper and some change. Pam would go "hey its laundry night again hey?" and usually pour a second tapper on the house. Nice lady who really liked people.

It is horrible how senseless this is. If you want money and you're a masked punk in a relatively empty bar, TAKE THE DANG $$$ AND GET THE HECK OUT!!!

He robbed the place of more than money - he robbed her kids, gradnkids, and firends. He robbed the community of safety and maybe a sense of welcoming strangers. PUNK!!!

Husband Speaks Out About Wife's Murder In Bar
Ty Milburn
Katie DeLong
Charles Benson

MILWAUKEE - The victim in Mondays cold-blooded murder may have known her killer.

Milwaukee police need help finding the person who gunned down Pam Roberts inside Coops Tiny Tap bar Tuesday afternoon.

Pams family and friends are pleading for information.

The crime is already affecting the neighborhood around 55th and Vliet.

Pam was a mother, a new grandmother, loving wife and devoted friend and employee.

The owner of Coops says they are closing up shop for good, because without Pam, there is no Coops.

The brutal murder has sent shockwaves through this community and left a hole in the heart of Pam's husband. He says he wont rest until his wife's killer is behind bars.

It wouldnt Tinys without Pam. She was the bar, Tom Roberts said.

Tom Roberts met his wife Pam at Tiny Tap eight and a half years ago. It was love at first sight.

We knew, she knew, I knew, and we've been together every day. Everything we do, we do it together, Tom Roberts said.

Their love story turned to tragedy on Tuesday.

It has devastated me. They took my life. They took everything away from me, Tom Roberts said.

By all accounts Pam was the heart and soul of tiny tap. She spent 18 years there serving up drinks and creating a home away from home to the customers she treated like members of her family.

She listened to their stories. She took their misery. She counseled them when she could. She was a great person, Tom Roberts said.

Tom is in so much pain he can't stop shaking. He says even if it takes the rest of his life, he is determined to bring his wife's killer to justice.

It's the anger, the hatred, the fear I have because this guy might do it again. It might not be your wife or girlfriend but somebody else's and he should be stopped, Tom Roberts said.

The pain was evident in the faces of Pam Roberts nieces and you could hear the heartbreak in their voices.

It's just horrible. For less than $100 somebody will take the life of person that made everybody else's life so much better, Pam Roberts niece, Sara Roth said.

Family members, friends and perfect strangers gathered outside Coops Tiny Tap Wednesday. They all started a memorial for Pam and held onto one another as they all struggled to make sense of her brutal murder.

Why would you shoot her? Why would you do that? Theres no reason to do that, Sara Roth said.

Police have surveillance video of the man they believe is Pams killer. Family members say the man shot Pam in the basement of the bar Tuesday afternoon and then robbed the place. They believe Pam had to have known him because she let him in the bar before it opened.

My aunt would never hurt anybody. For him to do this to hercold-blooded reckless negligent murderfor a hundred dollarsfor a hundred dollars, Sara Roth said.

The owner of Coops said shes had it.

This town is just so unsafe. Its just horrible, Amy Cooper said.

Wednesday, Amy Cooper had movers packing up equipment because she is shutting down the bar for good. She said Pam Roberts was the heart and soul of Coops, and without her, its over.

We cant go on without Pam. She was so much of a part of this place and we just have to shut it down. Were just done, Amy Cooper said.

Family members are gathering money for a reward.

They're questioning someone!

MILWAUKEE - Theres been a break in the investigation into the murder of a Milwaukee bartender.

Milwaukee police announced Tuesday they have someone in custody and that they are questioning that person in connection to the murder of Pamela Roberts.

Roberts, 58, was killed last month during a robbery inside Coop's Tiny Tap at 55th and Vliet.

TODAY'S TMJ4 has learned the man being questioned is 36-year-old Joel Cain.

Late Tuesday, Cain was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He served several years in prison for several burglaries in Illinois.

But nothing in Tuesday's criminal complaint links Cain with Roberts' murder.

We showed Cain's criminal complaint to Pam's husband, Tom Roberts.

He doesn't want to jump to any conclusion about the case.

TMJ4's Charles Benson asked, "When you read through the criminal complaint (does) anything jump out at you?"

Tom Roberts said, "Well, the fact that he is charged with a substantial felony."

According to the criminal complaint, Cain lived three blocks from the murder scene. He was unemployed and about to lose his house to foreclosure.

He also went to the bar often and he knew both Pam and Tom Roberts.

Tom Roberts said, "I cant believe that I've know this gentlemen. He never seemed like trouble. He never caused any trouble in the bar. I know he's had some difficulties in the past."

Tom believes that Pam knew her killer.

Is there a connection between Cain and Pam's murder?

Chief Edward Flynn says Cain was picked up for other crimes in the same neighborhood.

"We see here an opportunity to explore whether or he is in fact connected to that homicide and we are actively investigating that possibility," Flynn said.

Word spread quickly through the community that police had arrested someone they think could be connected murder of Pam Roberts.

Early is the investigation police released surveillance pictures of the suspect. Since then, detectives have been following several leads, but the arrest is the biggest development so far.

People who live and work in the area are relieved police are making progress in this case.

I think it would be a very big relief for everyone that lives in the area and the kids that go to school that they have the individual hopefully, one resident said.

Alderman Michael Murphy credits police for their diligence in the case.

I think this puts a little assurance and makes people feel a little more safe and secure, but I think we won't have any closure until we know this guys off the streets, Murphy said.

Police are trying to get more evidence against Cain before they can press charges. There is no word yet on when that may happen.

Cain remains in jail and police continue to investigate all possibilities.

Exclusive: New Information In Murder Of Bartender

Mick Trevey
Katie DeLong

MILWAUKEE - On the trail of a killer: exclusive new information about the cold blooded murder of a Milwaukee bartender nearly three months ago.

Pam Roberts was murdered at the Coops Tiny Tap at 55th and Vliet.

Joel Cain hasn't been charged with anything related to the murder of Roberts, but in search warrant documents obtained by TODAYS TMJ4, there is new information about the man police call a suspect in the case.

Family members continue to mourn the death of Pam Roberts. She was killed working at Coop's Tiny Tap. Family members closely watch the investigation.

We need to have this thing over with so that family and friends have their closure, Pams husband, Tom Roberts said.

Police released surveillance video of the suspect, and now we have new information. The video could show Joel Cain, the man police call a suspect, even though he hasn't been charged.

According the documents, Joel Cains wife, Sara told police "she believed it could be her husband, Joel C. Cain.

TODAYS TMJ4s Mick Trevey showed the document to Pam Roberts' husband, Tom.

She says it's possible it could be her husband, well that just makes us more positive, Tom Roberts said.

Mick Trevey also sat down with Joel Cain's lawyer.

The surveillance tape is of a heavily disguised person. The image is a heavily disguised person. I don't think anybody could realistically say it's anybody for sure, and she doesn't, Attorney Ann Bowe said.

The search warrant also reveals that Cain was at the bar the night before and may have "called Coops Tiny Tap on the morning of Roberts' homicide."

Most people know that bar doesn't open up until 1:00. So if he called the bar, he had something on his mind, Tom Roberts said.

If there is a phone call, does that prove he's guilty of a murder? Of course it doesn't. It doesn't really add anything, Bowe said.

Mick Trevey talked to the district attorney's office Tuesday. They say they're still investigating the case

Yikes, I hope that if it is really him, they find enough evidence to prove his crime. But if it's not, this media coverage certainly opens up all kinds of woes and challenges for this man. Just presenting the doubt in people's minds could really mess with his life.

I know her husband and kids and grandkids really really wanted a sense of closure. Her birthday was a couple weeks ago and they gathered around the (former) tavern for a candlelight vigil. Her husband went to go see this guy in court when he was charged with a different crime & said the guy (they all knew eachother) could not look at him, which to him was a sure sign of guilt. They deserve justice and that sense of closure.

She was a very nice lady. Made you feel at home at that bar, even if she was busy. Really just liked talking to people. and she made awesome, awesome bloody marys.
