What was your best Christmas as a kid?

Hello,

I thought it would be cool if we had a chat about our christmas experiences when you where little. Here is mine when I was around 12 years old, I shared a room with my younger brother in our basement. We went to bed around 9 pm and I just could not sleep, dreaming of some cool presents I hoped I got (I don't remember them now) anyway I would fall a sleep and wait up and look at the clock 10:00, 11:00, & 1:00 am. I think around 3:00 am I had enough of that so I woke my younger brother and told him "Santa came I heard him" Go wake mom & dad up" To get to there room we would have to pass by the living room (where the gifts are) and he said "ok" off he went, up stairs, saw the gifts and went to mom & dad's room. He tried to wake them but they said "Go back to bed it's 3 am". Then my father remembered where our room was and that my brother would see the gifts. So they got up. He had opened all of our presents by 4:30 am.

My parents to this day, never let me forget the time. "We had christmas early in the morning"

Oh what happy thoughts.

My best Christmas memory was the year my Mom & Dad bought me a pool table.

Not a real one of course, but one of those miniature ones, that are maybe 3 feet wide and 4.5 feet long.

I remember we got to the last gift of the night and they told me I had to go in the bathroom and wait for them to bring down my gift from upstairs.  I figured it was a present that had a shape that would have given away what it was if they put it under the tree, I never expected a pool table.

While I was waiting in the bathroom they were having trouble getting it down the stairs (their house is SUPER small and the stairs to the second floor are very narrow and twisting).  When they took it up a few weeks earlier it was in a box, but for giving it to me that had set it up, so it was a little tougher to manuevre down the steps.  Just as they started about 5 of the balls came out of the return shoot and were bouncing down the stairs loudly, which REALLY raised my curiosity.

So I heard them struggle past the bathroom and into the living room, and I heard my Dad come and snatch up all the balls and go back into the living room, finally they yelled for me to come out.

I was notorious as a child for looking at my gifts early.  I tried everything from wetting the Christmas paper to make it see through and then using a hair dryer to dry it back up, to just surgically opening the tape and then resealing it.  As a result I was quite proficient at "acting" surprised every year at each of my gifts.

This time I was TRULY surprised, I had NO idea it was coming and it was AWESOME, so when they let me open my eyes and I saw it I just stood there shocked for like 3 minutes straight.

My Mom wound up thinking I didn't like it and was kind of bummed, I was explaining to her for months that I LOVED it, I just didn't know how to react.

THAT WAS DEFINATELY THE BEST CHRISTMAS

My best Christmas was when I was about 6.  I got a Huffy Rose bike from Santa.  In Germany, Santa comes on Christmas Eve, so my dad loaded us up and drove us around looking at Christmas lights.  I remember drinking coke and eating peanuts while we looked at all the lights and waiting impatiently to get back and wondering why may dad was driving so slowly when he never ever in his life had driven that slowly.  It was worth it when I got my bike.  I also got a cute pair of white boots with faux fur.

My dad was in the military and was away a lot.  He was going to help me learn to ride my bike, but he was gone for most of that next month and I just couldn't wait.  We lived in an apartment building with about 18 to 24 families.  At the end of the parking lot was a row of dumpsters.  I rode down the parking lot over and over until I finally got it.  The only problem was, I crashed into the dumpsters more than a dozen times.  Did I mention I'm stubborn?

Anyway, that was the best Christmas.  Old enough to remember it, but not old enough for it to lose it's magic.

Mine was when I was 11 or 12 yrs old, I got a brand new softball glove, a big ol' one. And that christmas day it was like 65 degrees in milwaukee- an absolute oddity. Me and the dad just tossin the ball around out front in out t-shirts.

Trish, your story sounds great. Can I ask you a question, Is it true that in Germany they do not celebrate Halloween? I heard it's a creepy time . Sorry to get off the story line.

Looking over your story. I remember my dad teaching me to ride my bike as soon as he let go I took my hands off the handle bars (to ride like the big boys with no hands) and I fell and broke my arm. ouch.

First, this is my first post, so if I say anything goofy, I'd like to apologize right off the bat.

I'd have to say my favorite christmas was when I got my first 10 speed bike. It was light pink and black, and I was so excited.  My parents had told me after all the presents were open to go grab a bag out of an ajoining room, and when I got into the room, there it was.  I took that bike out in 15 degree weather, and loved every minute of it!

Actually, the Germans are starting to celebrate Halloween.  Before that, we would go out on St. Martin's Day.  You walk around with lanterns and torches and sing songs and recite poems in tribute to St. Martin and also there was a song about the lantern (called Laterne).  You would go from house to house singing and the host would offer you whatever they have.  We mostly received coin money.  That was nice.  Sometimes you also got cookies or a pershing like pastry that is jelly filled and is called krapfen (spelling).  It also started the first day of Fasching, which is AWESOME.  They have a parade in the bigger cities and they throw candy and money.  If you are of age (and of age is 14 in Germany), there was a beer truck that went down the street and you could get a cup of beer.  It is a blast.  Both St. Martin's Day and Fasching are based on religion.  Fasching is the beginning of the season to celebrate before lent starts.  It is kind of like a warning to party because lent will start at the beginning of the next year.  All Saints Day is celebrated on Nov. 1st and the German's are very into that.  They place candles and gifts on the graves of their loved ones.  It is very eerie going into a cemetery when all of those candles are lit because they are usually in red globes (at least in the town where we lived).

The Germans are still very steeped in their religious beliefs and it is celebrated PUBLICLY, which would probably cause a big problem over here.  But then again, they are taught religion in school over there, too.  Their priorities are a little different than ours.  In Germany, you attend college if you are the best in your class and you are selected to go, because college is paid for by the government.  Only the best of the best are allowed to go.  Otherwise, you are sent to trade school.  If you are fortunate enough to be selected for college, you don't waste it.  There are some things they do that I really wish they would do over here.  If you work, you have health insurance.  Period.  It is provided by the government.  Their taxes are higher (WAY higher), but they don't pay for health insurance.

Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know, but I thought I'd fill you in.  They have some very beautiful traditions.  We lived over there for over 10 years and my mom is German, so I tend to be a little biased.

My best Christmas as a kid was every Christmas.  My dad worked two fulltime jobs and happened to be one of two days a year where he didn't have to work either job.  I was nice to have him for a whole day.

Although one year it was even a little better because my dad got me the pink hummingbird bike.  Ya know it had the big banana seat and all.  It was great.  I was so proud of that bike.

My sister and I just talked about this very subject last night on the phone.  She lives 2500 miles away from me and is 3 years younger than I.  My best Christmas was when we lived in a one bedroom apartment above a hardware store and I got an orange bicycle with a banana seat and my sister and I both got huge coffee mugs with the ABCs on them.  Mine was blue and I would use mine for Lipton's cup of soup all the time.  I remember making Christmas trees out of colored styrofoam egg cartons, garland and glitter.   We both remember having so many gifts under the tree that you couldn't see the floor.  Not sure how we could afford all of them at that time but it must have been the Christmas Spirit.
