Mrs Web said she talked to her coworker about the dough. She has used both frozen and bread machine dough with success.
The coworker said prefers using "Krusteaz Bread Mix" for bread machines.
Now for the recipe . . .
Bread: 2 pkgs dry yeast 1/4 cup warm water 1 cup milk 1/2 cup sugar 2 tsp salt 1/4 cup soft shortening 5 cups flour (approximately) 2 eggs
Soften yeast in water. Heat milk. Add sugar, salt and shortening to milk. Cool to lukewarm. Add approximately 1 cup flour to make a thick batter. Mix well. Add softened yeast and eggs. Beat well. Add enough more flour to make a soft dough. Knead on floured board until smooth and satiny (5-7 minutes). Place in greased bowl, cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in size. Punch down, cover, let rest 10 minutes. While dough is rising, prepare beef-vegetable filling.
Beef-Vegetable Filling: 2 medium onions (chopped) 4 Tblsp margarine 2 lbs hamburger 3 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper 1 small head cabbage (chopped)
Brown onions in butter and add meat, stirring until no longer red. Add salt, pepper and cabbage. Simmer for 45 minutes, covered, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool.
When dough has risen sufficiently, turn onto floured board and roll 1/4 inch thick, making a rectangle 16 x 24 inches. Cut with a sharp knife into 6 (8 inch) squares. Pack cooled filling into 1/2 cup measure and place on center of each square. Bring corners together at center of the top of the square and pinch edges to seal, making 4 diagonal seams. Place on well greased baking sheet dough edges down. Combine 1 egg with 2 tablespoons milk and brush on runzas. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot or cold.
Wow! Thanks for sharing- someone really likes to cook. She made that on a week night too! Phew. I am impressed. I have never made bread and have swore off white bread... but I can try to make a healthy alternative... the hubby and I like cabbage and onions and he has gotten used to turkey.
Has anyone else ever eaten them. It sounds very very very good!
I've eaten them lots of times Ruby and they really are yummy!!! Oh and if you can make enough of them up, they freeze really well after they've been baked....but they never last long enough in my house to make it to the freezer.
About the only difference between Mrs. Web's and mine is that I just brush the tops of mine with butter as soon as they come out of the oven and forego using egg & milk mixture as Mrs. Web does before she bakes them.
Thanks so much for posting Mrs. Web's bread dough recipe Web!! I lost my grandma's recipe for bread quite a few years ago and my dad threw out all of my mom's recipes before I had a chance to go through them. I think I'll follow Mrs. Web's recipe for making bread dough.......I really want to make some of these this weekend while the girls will be home to help me fill a bunch of them. Gosh I'm so hungry for these I can almost taste 'em right now!!!!
I bet I could make the dough in my bread machine and just use my egg alternative. And since I'm not all that fond of cabbage, maybe I could put broccoli or green pepper in it...
