Goodbye Chicago....

they've got to be out of their minds. this will really hurt the hotels down there I think, especially for the christmas shopping season. and I bet the retailers will whine whine whine too. This is absurd....Not that I did a lot of shopping down there, but I do enjoy visiting the Mag Mile usually once or twice a year....not sure if this will affect restaurant prices or hotel prices either? If so, Goodbye Chicago. Nice visiting ya when I was able....

Chicago shopping will be more expensive

Starting July 1, a shopping trip to Chicago's Magnificent Mile will cost more. That's when the sales tax in the city hits an astronomical 10.25%, which may be the highest in the U.S.

The increase is the result of a vote by the Cook County board early this month. Sales tax rates are lower outside of the City of Chicago and in outlying counties such as Lake and DuPage, where some of the popular malls are located. But all of the rates are higher than in Wisconsin. Illinois' sales tax base rate is 6.25%.

The Chicago Tribune explains the situation and provides a handy sales tax map.

This is probably good news for Wisconsin retailers who lose business when shoppers cross the border to spend money in Illinois malls and Michigan Avenue stores. The biggest beneficiary may be the Prime Outlets at Pleasant Prairie, which have drawn customers from Illinois for years.

OH MY GOD!

That is INSANE!

Where is the limit? In 2050 will we be paying a 25% sales tax?

This of course opens the door for every other state to raise theirs substantially.

thats just it. sure the outlets in racine and kenosha will see a boost, which is good, but ya can't tell me if the descrepancy is that wide, we won't eventally want to play "catch up" to Illinois. evileye

I agree!  Great way to lose tourism and shoppers!  Also great way to give other states an incentive to raise the amount on sales tax.  hmmcry

I can't afford to shop as it is! Michigan is in its own recession let alone the rest of the country!
