Wow! Sticker shock at the supermarket!

I got hit again!  I can't believe how prices are soaring.

I used to buy a carton of eggs and seperate the whites to make my omlettes or scrambled eggs.  I like egg beaters but they're kind of pricey.

Well, eggs have skyrocketed the last year, over 100% increase in price.  So I started using egg beaters.

Last night I went to buy some more.  the STORE BRAND version was $4.99 for the equivalent of 15 eggs!  FOUR NINETY NINE!!!!  The actual Egg Beaters brand was nearly $6.00!!!

This is out of control.

I'm just gonna buy four of my own chickens and get my eggs farm fresh every morning hmm.gif

Last year they were .69 on sale for .50.

Now they're approaching $2.00 at times.

But the egg beaters are really skyrocketing. I hated paying $3.69, but $4.99!!! Give me a break.

Don't even get me started about the prices at the grocery store!!  furious  Trying to feed my family is like playing Russian Roulette....doesn't matter what I'm buying or what I decide not to buy, I'm shooting the food budget all to hell right now.   I'm trying to get more creative using veggies as the big part of our meals, but even those have sky-rocketed in price over the past month.

I keep telling my family I wish I could just give them each a pill that would fulfill their food requirements.  hmm

I've been watching the sales and stocking up on the cheapest food I can find.

This week they have rice-a-roni on sale ten for $10. A box of rice-a-roni is two meals for me, so that's .50 a meal. I bought 20 boxes smile.gif

This simply can't go on. Its a bad economy. and now inflation in food and fuel. what the hell. 3rd world countries are starving, undoing years of stability and progress...its getting hard enough for us here to put gas in the car to go to the grocery store to get gouged there....

Last year I could find a good pork tenderloin on sale for $3.99 a lb. The last one I bought, on sale was $6.99 a lb.

I know. For the first time in years I'm actually concerned there's no turning this around.

Fuel costs affect EVERYTHING. Now the damn use of corn to help ease fuel costs is affecting EVERYTHING even more.

How do we turn it around? Do you think we'll see prices drop at the supermarket? Hell no.

I was thinking last night, even if tomorrow they started trucking stuff around using hydrogen powered semis that saved a ton on gas, they'd keep the new found profits for themselves, you're not gonna see that tenderloin suddenly at $3.99 again.

sometimes on msn.com they'll have recipies using relatively affordable ingredients. If I go vegetarian, it isn't by choice, its by need. mmmmm chickpeas hungry.gifbleh.gif

My husband suggests we go to a Japanese diet.....rice 3 times a day, and add some veggies and very little meat to the main meal.  Last night, he went to the Oriental food market and bought two 25 lb bags of rice; I think he paid $25 total for it.  He also bought 3 cases of Ramen noodles.....we'll use them as soup or stir fry them.

Yeah, regular price is usually 3 for a buck and that's name brand.  Might have something to do with having 3 college campuses in the vicinity, haha.

JD, ever try adding a little soy sauce once they're in a bowl? Also, they're really easy to stir fry.....cook 'em like you're making soup only leave the powder out. Then drain 'em, use a little bit of sesame oil to fry 'em in. You can add sliced up green onion, fresh asparagus, slivered left-over steak, mushrooms.....actually you can add just about any kind of vegetables or meat you have. smile

Oh, I forgot to add....the sesame oil will be a little expensive if you don't already have some, but once you buy a bottle of it, it lasts a long time because you're only using a little bit at a time.  smile

hey thanks for the hints sandy, that is something I could totally do. I actually don't mind like ramen salads etc, but straight up I don't think I could ever do again! but the fried sounds good enough.

lol I remember it was such a treat when I could affoard a bag of mixed veggies to put in the raman. lol like $1.50 and I was set for lunches for a week....

I'm like that with boxed mac & cheese.....the Kraft stuff in the tall skinny blue box.  bleh  When I first moved out of my parents' house, I really wasn't that good of a cook and mac & cheese was sooo easy and convenient to make.  I just can't stomach that stuff anymore.

Ya know what I find helps make the Ramen noodles edible?

I don't drink the juice.  I drain it, put the noodles in a bowl, maybe add some mushrooms (still cheap for now) and then sprinkle some grated parmesan and herb mix on top.

It makes it more like a sauceless spaghetti than a cup of soup.  I likes it.  smile.gif

Oh man, I hate buying food. I swear the cheapest we can get by on is $70 a week. If we're out of cleaning supplies or shampoo or something, it's more like $100. Of course, I have special needs, but it shouldn't cost so much more to buy natural or whole foods. It's ridiculous.

And, it's harder to get rice now. For some reason, all of a sudden there's a rice shortage? I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it really seems like something is wrong here.

I empathize, Mz. It used to be much more economical to buy the healthy, fresh foods, and I loved that. Now it seems like nothing is safe from startling inflation. In fact, we've seen some things do a full reversal in our time. Remember when chicken was the thing to buy when you were feeling poor? And bread was a cheap fix? Corn on the cob was an inexpensive side dish? That all seems to have reversed, don't you think? As it has with so many other things...hmm

I read today the reason eggs and chicken are so expensive is like everything else, BECAUSE OF CORN!

Chickens are apparantly corn fed hmm.gif

And now bread and wheat is skyrocketing because the government is paying farmers to plant corn instead of wheat to help with ethanol.

crying.gif I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!! IT'S LIKE WE JUST KEEP SHOOTING OURSELVES IN THE FOOT!!!! crying.gif

I drive out of my way to go to "Price Rite" BUT with the price of gas I'm not sure if the money I save buying my groceries there, outweighs the cost of my gas.

I have to bring my own shopping bags, and it's .25cents for a shopping cart, so we all do "cart deals" in the parking lot for each other's carts. But they don't have to pay a kid to bring in the shopping carts all day long, so in turn it saves us money inside for the groceries. I am really surprised at how much lower the prices are there at "Price Rite" Anyone else go there?
