Flashback...whoah!

So I saw this article about climbing gas prices could increase fule thefts, and decided to do a search. The following excerpt amused me...it is from USA Today and posted in June of 2005.

As the average price of a gallon of regular gas, $2.21, stands near record levels this holiday weekend, gas station owners say thefts are soaring.

In response, at least 10 states have stiffened penalties this year or are considering it.

"Our drive-offs are up probably 100%" this year, says Jeff Miller of Norfolk, Va., president of a company that operates 88 gas stations and convenience stores selling gas. "We're on track to lose about a quarter of a million dollars" in 2005.

Can you imagine what we would have thought about gas prices then if we knew what it would be today? Wow...

I know!  We thought it was bad then.....little did we know, huh?

All of our gas stations here have gone to pay first within the last week.  They've said drive-offs are at an all-time high.  I don't mind paying first, but dang, I wish they'd set it so the pump slowed down at 80 cents instead of 30 cents....like if I'm putting in $15, right now it slows way down at $14.30.  Takes forever to get the last 70 cents. hmm

I know what you mean...that's annoying when it crawls toward the next whole dollar.

Did you see the video on the Yahoo main page about gas theft and siphoning? As if there isn't enough to worry about!

I have noticed fewer of those gas guzzler , "HUMMER"s on the road these days. Speaking of flashbacks, remember a few years ago when they were popular? I used to see at least one a day, I don't think I've seen one of these vehicles in months...???

oh I hate those so much. they don't have bumpers, they have rammers so they can ram you off the road. I always thought that should be illegal.

Really? I still see quite a few around Milwaukee. It's a prestige thing...it says "I've got money to burn." Isn't it sick that Hummers were designed for military use and they're such fuel monsters?

I'd still love to have the military version of one......run right over the top of the jerks that pull out right in front of me!!  Or hit 'em with a rocket.  biggrin

There are three Hummers here in town.

One of them is driven by the wife of a heating and air business owner. People around down are saying that he must be overcharging if he's got money to burn like that.

Another is driven by the wife of a pig farmer's son. She is my wife's cousin. They live in town, but their farm is about 20 miles from here and they have hog units all over the county. A few years ago when pork prices were really low, there was rumor of them in bankruptcy. Now that prices are back up, I guess its time to live "high on the hog".

The third one is driven buy a short little guy that works for a hunting/fishing resort. He is a total pile of poo. He and his wife recently split up. She now runs an in-home daycare but used to work with my wife. He is/was quite abusive to her, I guess she finally got tired of it and kicked him out. There is NO WAY he can really be able to afford that thing. I think it just makes him feel like a bigger man when he's driving his Hummer. Now he gets to drive his Hummer to the court house to make his child support payments.

Wow, it doesn't sound like the brand leaves a very good impression in your town, Web, based on the view of its consumer!

No, not yet, but every time I make a payment now, I do it in person and make them look it up to see how many more months before we get our deposit back.

It really has nothing to do with the Hummer. I think its just the facts of small town life where everyone knows everyone else's business. When you are sitting in the coffee shop crying about prices, expenses, and taxes, then a few days later seen driving proudly down the street in a totally unnecessarily expensive vehicle like a Hummer, you begin to be perceived as a fool.

Good point. Driving extravagant autos that guzzle gas really does revoke your right to whine about that kind of stuff in the public eye.

De nada. smile

It really was something I came across when I was researching some recent news footage I heard. The media is warning against guel theives at the pump as well as people being at risk for gas siphoning, which apparently was a hot issue in 2000 as well. SOme dang fool better NOT get any bright ideas about siphoning gas from my car! evileye
