Potential Stimulus Bonus if you're receiving a check

It only applies if you're getting a paper check from the government.

But lots of national retailers and some local ones are offering incentives to use your stimulus check in their store.

K-Mart, Sears & Lands End are among a group of stores offering to cash your check and put it's value on a gift card with an additional 10%.

So if you're getting $600 you'd get $660.  $900 would get $990. And so on.

Here in Milwaukee Roundy's food stores are even making the same offer!

Yeah, if you were gonna spend it at the store anyway, what the heck.

And if you have a food store that's doing it, well that's just a no-brainer.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of other sales when the checks come out, too. So what are you all thinking of doing with the "free money?"

I really wanted to use mine to fix that dent in my car. but I think it might be wise to maybe just put 1/2 of it towards that use, and save the other half for now. who knows, in this economy, there might just be way better & necessary uses for it....

how about you??

I've been considering a Play Station 3.

I'm not much of a gamer, but I love the sports games. I have bought the gaming units in the past, but wasted too much time playing and felt guilty about having a $400 item that does nothing but waste my time.

The PS3 has Blu-Ray though, and it's the same price as the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market. So I figure I can justify it as a Blu-Ray player and the gaming aspect is just a bonus.

Blu-Ray movies are pricey, but Netflix has a nice selection of them and rent them for the same price, so I'd just get em' from there.

All good ideas...with the current economic state, who knows when we'll all get another chance to play a little like this again. I was thinking of getting a new mattress and headboard, since I'm about due. Then my tax returns will be dedicated to paying some bills. Yay. hmm

Does giving us 10% more for our cash make us feel like we're getting a better deal than if they offered 20% off any items purchased with your refund check?

Take it to Sears!!! They might give you $13.75!! smile.gif

I got a letter a week ago from the IRS saying I should have filed for an earned income credit and asking me if I'd like them to figure it out and send me a check.

I said... "Duh! YEAH!!!!"

Ours is going here and there. It will help with our moving obviously. It will pay for my husband's hunting trip in November, pay off a small credit card and I am not sure about the rest.

I hope everyone understands what the bill passed does. It essentially changed the lowest tax bracket. Therefore it isn't a refund, it is simply an advance of your money already paid in this year. So, just remember that this tax advance will simply lower you refund (if applicable) next April. I just wanted to remind everyone in case they have big plans for their refund in April 09. I don't want anyone to be shocked.

all this just confuses me no.gif
I thought it was good because when you look up info on it , it says that it will not affect your next refund by decreasing your refund or making you pay it back. I guess next year will just stink. cry

Fuzzy,

The way they've been reporting it they've said it won't lower our tax refund, but it was a credit that was going to be applied next year, simply being bumped up.

Like next year we were going to get more than we would normally get.

But you're saying it's actually going to LOWER our refund from what we would normally get any other year?

When the originall bill was to be passed, that was they way they stated it. Perhaps they changed it before it was final and you guys are correct. Apparently I should make sure I read the final passed bill. Sorry for the confusion.

If my husband gets unemployment (which it sounds like he will), then we're going to use a little less than half for a long weekend in Florida to see my grandparents. If he doesn't, we're going to use it for living expenses.

From a memo while I was working at Jackson Hewitt:

What happens to my 2008 tax return if I didnt qualify for the 2008 rebate
check?
The Stimulus Payment will be a credit on the 2008 tax return. Those taxpayers that
did not qualify to receive the 2008 rebate check may be eligible for the rebate credit
when they file their 2008 tax return.

What happens to my 2008 tax return if I do receive a 2008 rebate check?
If you received all of the allowed rebate in your 2008 rebate check, there will be no
affect to your 2008 tax return.
If you received more rebate than the allowed rebate when filing your 2008 tax
return, there will be no affect.
If you received less rebate than the allowed rebate when filing your 2008 tax return,
you will be eligible for the rebate credit of the difference.
