Thoughts On Surveillance

This is a bad part of town. I'm glad it will now be monitored. It might very well deter crime, or at least make it easier to track down suspects. What is your thought on Surveillance. Is it an invasion of your privacy, or should we have been doing this years ago??

Surveillance cameras on N. 27th St.

Five safety surveillance cameras will be installed along N. 27th St. from W. State to W. Michigan streets this month as part of a plan to revitalize and improve the area that's now been dubbed SOHI, for "south of Highland Ave."

At a news conference this morning with city and police officials, SOHI district manager Keith Stanley said the surveillance program, along with a new marketing program that was unveiled, are part of ongoing efforts "to make 27th St. viable, safe and create an improved business environment."

The cameras were paid for with private money from business interests in the area, Stanley said. He refused to reveal the cost of the project.

District 3 Capt. James Harpole called the cameras initiative vital to crime prevention and detection. There is already a surveillance camera at N. 27th St. at W. Wells St. that recently led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be involved in two armed robberies in the area, he said.

The new cameras will be tied into an Internet-based hub that will be stationed at the Penfield Children's Center on N. 27th St., Stanley said. While the computers will not be continually monitored, they will be reviewed by police and Marquette University safety officials.

"The marketing program and the safety surveillance will take 27th St. to the next level," Mayor Tom Barrett said.

The SOHI district is one of the city's Main Street programs, which get additional assistance and support from the city for redeveloping commercial strips.

With the increasingly high cost of gasoline, Barrett said, areas like SOHI will become increasingly important so that residents can live, work and shop in their neighborhoods.

I'm torn.

When I think about it logistically, I have no problem with surveillance cameras.

But then, I think about if the cameras were filming me. I'd be nervous walking down the street, even if I was doing nothing wrong; the same way I get nervous when I pass a cop when I'm going the speed limit.

I'm not sure if they really deter crime or not.  They tried using them here in a few bad neighborhoods, but it didn't help cut down on the crime.  Also, the thugs found the cameras and either stole 'em or damaged them.  blankstare

I'm all for it as long as the police don't go overboard with surveillance. I see managed surveillance in high crime areas as a tool to deter issues or even solve crimes in those areas. But people will catch on and find smarter ways to commit the crimes unseen or move on to another area.

It's no band-aid for the crime problems in this city, and quite frankly, our police department needs to take a hard look at themselves and beef up their patrolling and responsiveness to calls. The problem still remains that our police department, whether understaffed or ineffective, just isn't getting the job done. evileye

It's not uncommon for Milwaukee police to take 20 minutes to respond to an emergency call - I've heard it many times over and encountered it personally. That's not comforting when the nearest police station is no more than 5 minutes away. When you see the half-hearted attempt to investigate the crime, that's even more discouraging.

I even once planted the gossip that I had installed a surveillance camera overlooking my yard and parking area (where I lived some years back). Some kids got the idea of dealing drugs in the yard because it was so concealed and kept breaking into nearby cars as well. Within one day the dealing and car issues stopped happening on my block...but it just moved to another property around the corner. Now I didn't live in a terrible neighborhood, but the threat of these crimes moving in did convince a lot of us to move out of that area. Surveillance doesn't necessarily stop the crime, but more often moves it.

I am all for it, what would you think from me??

But I do have to say, people go out and get suveillance cameras etc, but then after some time they get lazy, and the tapes or the video is not being turned on, changed over or updated, and when they really need to show their suveillance tapes etc, you can't even figure them out!! If you are going to have it, get it to work properly.

It's fine with me. The way I look at it, as long as you aren't doing anything wrong, you should have to worry about it.

I'm all for surveillance cameras. I agree with some of the other posts, as long as I'm not doing anything wrong, why should I care?

I do, however, take issue with our local tavern putting in a web cam and putting it on their myspace page without telling me. That I did not care for too much. It's never good when someone you haven't seen in awhile chuckles when they see you and says "Man, did you know you're on myspace?" Oy. weirdface.gif

Wow Trish, to me that sounds really close to flirting with invasion of privacy issues!  Maybe if you said something to the owner they'd re-think what they're doing by posting it on a public board without getting customers' consent.
