Question about paying royalties

This may have been addressed before, but if so I don't remember.

Does the station pay royalties depending on how many listeners are tuned in during the play of a song?

And if so, would it help save a little bit of $ to tune out when I know I'm going out to lunch or will otherwise be away from my desk for a good chunk of time?

you know what? Ever since we switched to Loud City, I have NO idea?confused

Live365 based our charges on how many VIP paying listeners we had tune in. In the hey day, I don't think it cost us a dime to broadcast for a couple of pay periods, so it was all covered.

I know that Riggs asks that people tune out when they are away for a period of time, due to the limited amount of listening slots we have right now. BUT if you are one of the first ones to tune in for the day, you are listening at 128k, which is phenomenal sounding. ya might not want to give that up at the risk of tuning back in at a 64k rate. which still is pretty darn good. smile

I'm pretty sure LoudCity takes care of that, and JR pays a monthly fee based on the number of available slots, with no regard to how many of those slots are actually used.

Also, the last thing I read (which could be outdated at this point), is that the bill to pay royalties based on number of listeners was vetoed. I believe the royalty rate is still based on income.
