Ducks rarely listen . . . especially when they are all in a row.

But Sparky, your duck didn't need to duck. It needed to swerve.

Goose!

I used to be one of those guys that would go get in my pickup and sit on a hill dodging lightning strikes and hail stones to talk on a radio and say "It's right here! Its right here!"

My Grandma would make us kids (5 and 7) put metal buckets over our heads and send us out in golf ball sized hail storms with blankets to cover her tomato plants. But I'm ok now. confuse.gif

I was never a "chaser" but a "spotter". We didn't actually chase the storms with equipment like the chasers you see on tv. What we did was dispatch to specific, known spots throughout the county, and once you were on point, thats where you stayed.

All these "spotter points" were planned and marked out on maps. This way, when someone would report what they were seeing "West from point 4-2", everyone else could look at their own maps and know right where the spotter and the weather condition was located. Also, if for some reason, you became silent, everyone else knew right where to go looking for you.

We would report back into a command central via ham radio. The tv stations and broadcast radio stations would monitor us and use our reports to keep everyone else updated. My wife always listened to us and she said it always took at least 20 minutes for our reports to be put out on the tv or radio.

My wife thought it would be fun to go with me once to see what it was like. She did go ONCE and would never go with me after that. She happened to pick one of the rougher/longer storms to go on. hmm.gif

I remember when I was a kid, by the time tornado warnings were issued on tv or radio, it had already been through and was gone.  At least they've gotten a little better at getting warnings out earlier.

Yeah, with all the radar advancements and everything, there's not much excuse for getting caught off guard now.

I was spotting when we still lived in Lincoln. One thing that made us feel needed and important is that they trusted our eyes more than the radar images. Some communities blow the whistles based on radar signatures. Lincoln wouldn't blow the sirens until one of us reported or confirmed a funnel. Many times we would watch and track rotating clouds, but they were never reported as a funnel based on that alone.

The civil defense monitored us closely with their fingers on the siren buttons, but didn't blow the sirens until necessary. The good thing about that was that the city didn't become used to the sirens going off and "crying wolf". If you heard the sirens go off, you knew there was a funnel spotted and confirmed and not just a "well, we think there might be one over there".

I think I'd like that better.  Here, they use the sirens based on cloud rotation, whether it's a confirmed funnel cloud or not.  And yeah, people are getting used to the sirens going off without an actual tornado in the area.  I monitor the sky and use my judgement.  Although if the sirens go off in the middle of the night, I'm in the basement!

I was in the north woods years ago camping when a tornado touched down less than 1/4 of a mile from us. Having lived through tornado and earthquakes--Earthquakes anytime over tornado.

You know, having now experienced both an earthquake and a tornado in the same general area, I have to agree with CP.

Growing up in Westland I remember saying that I would NEVER live in Livingston County because they were always on alert. When we moved this time I though I was gonna be in LC but we are still Genesee. Then my husband told me that I had already lived in LC. I thought about and S.O.B. I did when I was younger before we got together- laughing.gif
