Last night while I couldn't sleep AGAIN (I swear I've forgotten how to fall asleep) I was going through the Bzzagent website and came across a link to a financial website called mint.com.
It's absolutely free and I think ABSOLUTELY COOL! Without giving any account numbers this website will put all of your financial information in one place and update it daily.
All your bank balances, investment info and credit card debts on one page, so you can keep a close eye on them each and every day.
I was shocked to see they even have my bank from Milwaukee which was kind of small and never available on Microsoft Money.
The web site makes it's profit by recommending ways for you to save money through it's partners.
For example. It showed me several options on how I could make better interest on my checking account by switching to a different bank (I could make an extra $459 a year in interest, nothing to sneeze at).
It also let's you enter your basic credit score and then based on your credit recommends other credit cards that serve people in your situation but offer lower interest rates.
It's pretty neat. If anyone wants to check it out you can do so here...
i noticed you promoting this. I need to remember to check it out more in depth. I tried Microsoft money but didn't like it so I'm leery of something else but it seems simple enough. Do you feel it is secure enough? Having all that stuff in one place seems to be what people are most afraid of.

Well, I think the fact they don't ask for account numbers makes me feel better about it.
I checked most of my online accounts and none of them give account numbers on the sites themselves, so even if someone were able to look at them they wouldn't be able to do anything with it.
They do have a long explanation of how and why they are secure.
I tried using Microsoft Money myself and was never very impressed with it. Too many accounts weren't available to be tracked with it.
Another thing I like about Mint.com is that I can view this information from any computer at any place.
I've actually made it my home page, so I see it first thing in the morning. I'm thinking that the fact I'll be on top of any suspicious activity within 24 hours offsets the risk of using the site.

that is all very cool!

I noticed that too MZ. I've had to fix a few, but for the most part it's right on.
I haven't gotten to the emailing me warnings part yet, but that's something I'll have to check into.
One of my goals for the next 12 months was to get my finances in order and start saving again. Stumbling onto this will be a huge help.
I've tried so many times to use Microsoft Money, but it always seems like it's more work than it's worth. Particularly since my bank wasn't supported so all that info had to be entered manually.
I was all happy to sign up and then I was quickly disappointed. My main bank would not come up. I sent an email but didn't remember until today that I left out some info. Our bank switched names a few years back. It's the same bank but when they expanded to other surrounding cites they changed the name. The old name and website will pop up on mint but not the current. If I can't have this bank then the site will do very little for me. We have a total of 3 banks. One of the savings showed up but I am also having trouble with another bank. But I'm not bothering to pursue that one unless I can get our main bank.

I guess you need to have some kind of money in order to have an account or use the site. I don't think it can link my piggy bank and the $6 in change in it.

I did wind up with one credit card that amazingly they don't have a listing for. Luckily it's an "emergency" card that I never use anyway because of it's high interest rate.
If you sent Mint.com an email about your bank I bet they'll add it. It sounds like a newer service and they're probably still in the process of adding all the banks and stuff like that.
I can pay bills from my online banking. A hacker could easily set himself (or one of his vendors) up as a payee and then write himself a really nice check from within there.
Nothing is 100% safe and my online bank account could get hacked without Mint being involved, but I guess my concern would be what if Mint gets hacked? If that happened, Mint's hacker would suddenly have access to ALL my account logins at the same time. I wouldn't be left with just one account breech to deal with, but EVERY account. Thats what scares me.
Yeah, at my bank, the online bill pay was a separate option I had to signup and apply for. Its free, but it had to be set up separately at the bank's home office.
It is a really nice feature though. I go online and just pick which account to have it come out of, enter the amount to send to which vendor, and click "done". They print the checks and actually mail them to the vendors. They don't even charge me for the postage.
Woo, my main bank account always comes up with an error logging on in Mint. I actually tried using Mint late last year, but couldn't get my bank account to work, so I discarded it. Then they sent me an email saying, "You haven't visited lately." I thought I'd check, and it actually downloaded all my information even though on the account screen it still says there's an error. So you might still try it.
I tried using my bank's bill pay, but I prefer paying from the companies' respective websites. With the bill pay, it took so much longer for my payments to be applied, where if I pay from the company's website, it's usually applied in 1-2 days.
Speaking of online bill paying directly through a company, do any that you have to pay charge an extra convenience fee for using that? My phone company does....it's an additional $5.00 charge if I go to their website and pay it. I don't like that they do this and have decided they can wait for the check to reach them in the mail.
My gas company does that if I pay by credit card. But if I pay by e-check, they don't charge. That stinks in that scenario because my debit card if used as a credit card gives me cash back.
I sent them an email inquiring about adding the bank. I got a reply the next day about how they could not give an eta on how long it would take. I also emailed back more information because I noticed that they had the bank's old name available but not the current one. The bank is the same but they expanded to other cities so they changed the name. I'm hoping it will be an easy fix of them updating their info. We'll see.
