Just curious what everyone thinks. As a gas saving measure the idea of a four day work week is beginning to be considered by some.
---------
Columbia, SC -- Rising gas prices have some South Carolina governments offering four-day work weeks to some of their staff.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation rolled out a pilot program this week that offers a shorter work week this summer in exchange for longer work days. The program starts Monday.
State Transportation Department worker Latasha Compton was one of the first to sign up. Her husband is preparing for a second deployment and she says she'll spend the extra time off with him.
The South Carolina Association of Counties says at least five counties currently offer four-day work weeks to some employees, mostly in road and maintenance departments.
The notion of a four-day work week is picking up speed nationwide. States agencies in Florida, Kentucky and Oklahoma already offer shorter work weeks.
I work late almost every night because of the hubby but I don't get paid for it. So I wish they would let me do it. Then I just wouldn't come in on a day. I jokingly mentioned something the other day

I voted yes, which is generally true. But it would need to be somewhat flexible in case I needed to attend an early concert one night.

We all spend so much time at the office anyway. I know it is easy for me to sit here and work for another hour or so a day. If I had the option of 4 10 hour days I probably would do it.
Another thought would also be 9 hour days and every other Friday off.

Yes, that'd be nice.
I wouldn't even need it to be a Monday or Friday for a longer weekend. It could be any day of the week. That way, you're not coming in on a Monday or a Tuesday feeling really back logged. It's a little more secure feeling to me. And you still have that weekday to make any dr. appointments and take care of other daytime errands.
I used to have Thursdays off, and got so much done on them!

I like the idea behind it, but realistically it would cause a lot more stress for me. I'd have to arrange reliable transportation for my daughter to get home from school every day, trying to squeeze in dinner in an already hectic family schedule would be a royal pain, and I'd have a hard time adjusting going to and from work in the dark during the winter.
Ghost - I think that it is more difficult if you have people that rely on you. I see how having a family and children involved in extracurricular activities would make it hard. Heck, even just having dinner and doing homework with the kids may make it difficult. Since I come and go as I please and report to no one, it would be easier for me.

12 hour days are killers! I worked those a long, long time ago and would never go back to them. I can see how he'd lose a day just getting caught up on sleep.
I did 12 hour days for several years. I loved it when I was on days, but hated it when I was on nights.
On the night shift I'd lose the first day off to sleep and then I'd lose the day before work to sleep because I needed to rest. So instead of 3 and 4 day weekends it felt like I had 1 or 2 day weekends.
But on days it was cool. The workdays were shot to hell, but I'd have three or four days off and that made up for it for me.
The cabinet shop I used to work in, we worked 7:30 - 5:00 with a 1/2 hr lunch. That made for a 9 hr day which really wasn't too bad. Only 1/2 hr for lunch was was pushing it if you wanted to go anywhere for lunch but we had a few fast food places really close which helped. Most of the time I took my lunch with me.
The best part was that we got off a noon on Fridays.
I only had one day off a week; usually every Saturday. I'd be so tired that I couldn't even enjoy my day off. The paychecks were great, but I never got a chance to spend any of the money because I was always at work.
