Favorite Video on MTV

Hey

Back in the 80's, when MTV actually aired music, did you have a favorite video that you would sit there and hope would come on?

For me, it was Madness "One Step Beyond"- man them guys were spazzes!!

  ONE STEP BEYOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was crazy for anything David Lee Roth did, they were always hilarious.  Huey Lewis had some funny video's too.

The one video I didn't like was the concert video, it was always such a disappointment when a new song would come out and I'd be excited to see what they came up with for the video, only to find out it was just a 3 minute clip of the band in concert.

I hear you on the live videos. I have a collection here of Police videos from the early 80's- while great, many of their early videos were concert footage or simply them goofing off while on the road- home video footage etc- I thought it was sort of cheating- knocking out cheaply made videos while on the road- sort of killing 2 birds with one stone.

I agree one step beyond is a great video.

I liked Mirror in the Bathroom by The English Beat.

I actually remember watching MTV the day it started. I thought VIDEO KILLED the RADIO STAR was great only because it was the first to air. Sorry if that offends all you DJ's but man how appropriate was that to be the first video on MTV. The video will never kill the radio star .Of course MTV pretty much went down hill as soon as they got rid of the likes of Martha Quinn and the rest of the original VJ's.

English Beat is still one of my fav bands Scott! "Sooner or Later" was a fun video too. I've got this interactive cd by them "Best of The English Beat" that includes all there vids. Good stuff. They had 3/4 of a reunion on "Bands Reunited" on VH1 (did you see?) and took this unit on the road. They were in Chicago for 2 dates last year- would have LOVED to have seen that, but I found out like on the day of the 2nd show and couldn't get it together to get down there to see. Wasn't even in Chicago proper- it was at some little suburb bar somewhere I guess? I would have never have found it.

No I missed the VH1 thing. What is the name of the interactive deal you have ? I need to get a hold of that. Sounds like you were like me? Liked the Beat,Madness, and so on? Got anything there like The Specials,or The Style council? Do you remember a band called the 3'Oclock ? not too many people I talk to know of them. I had seen them with REM back in 84 or 85 I think. REM was actually the opening band and man did they suck bad. We actually all went back to the parking lot for more under age drinking until The 3'Oclock came on.

Land of Confusion by Genesis.  The video where it had the character of President Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher together.  I think that was the name of the song in the video.

Yea I dig the same stuff you mention there- thats what my Underground 80's show is- stuff like English Beat, Specials, Cure...hey if you are working friday night tune in at 10:00! A rebroadcast of it! If this is the stuff you like, I KNOW you'll dig the show!

The cd is called: Beat This- The Best of The English Beat. It was released in 2000. Its called a hyper cd- where you pop it into your CD rom drive and install their program. You are then able to click the icon on your desktop and watch the videos. It also acts as a regular cd that will play the songs on any cd player. Its pretty wild- I haven't seen any other "hyper" cds like this!

StevieB,

That WAS an excellent picture.  Those puppets were cool and scary at the same time.  If I'd been a few years younger I think that video would have given me nightmares.

Cool- Riggs has the dubious job of editing the shows from sunday for rebroadcast on friday, but I know he is busy with a ton of other stuff. IF it is indeed a rebroadcast of last sunday's show, I featured some early Church, Meat Puppets, Cult, Elvis Costello, Psychellic Furs among others. Otherwise the older archives of the show feature stuff like Specials, Ramones,Cure, Joy Division- all good stuff!

I'm with Stevie B Again on this one, I love the genesis Land of confusion video....One I also always liked was Grateful Dead's, "Touch of Grey". When the lighting flashed & they all turned to skeletons playing instruments...I thought that was the coolest special effect...I haven't seen it in a while & would probably think it was pretty cheesy now...but the memory of it still makes it cool

Yes indeed. Touch of grey is a great video. Well of course it is. The Dead in my opinion is the best band to ever step foot on this planet. Yes you heard me right. The best ever.

I got a DEAD STORY!

Fathers Day 1989. I get a call from a friend who worked in a head shop (and hated drugs- go figure.) Anyways, he says "I got a call from the road manager for the Dead! If I bring a case of Caberet Voltaire rolling papers out to the back of the stage at Alpine Valley, me and anyone I bring can get into the show for free- want to go??" So we and a couple of the other employees from the store went.

We had to park a mile away on the freeway and walk through a cornfield to get there. The dead liked these rolling papers because they had a wire in them, so none of what they were smoking would go to waste, no fingertips would get burned, and these were illegal in their home state of california.

We get to the back of the stage just after they hit the stage for their 2nd set. We explain who we are, and this old guy with purple eyes comes to meet us- the road manager for the dead. My buddy and his girlfriend get to go backstage to take care of business. This old guy was all "gee if you would have been here 20 minutes earlier you could have met the Dead." I didn't care.

While we were waiting for them to come back, one of the security guards at the gate said "hey look over there!" He pointed to 2 big hairy guys flailing around in a pond- obviously on some bad drugs. He asked me "what would you do in this case?" (!!!) I said "Call for help, obviously" He walkie talkied someone, 3 minutes later there were 4 golf carts of sherrifs out at the pond dealing with that.

My friends get back, and we got a password that let us into the show. We could go up to the general admission gate and say "Carrie Chrome" to the guard. We did so, we got a hand shake and a "welcome to the show" and got in for free.

What a wierd time. It was a good show- they did some Johnny Cash, and some real long extended psychadelic stuff that had all these weirdos on the lawn doing interpretive dance.

They ended with a version of "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and an encore of "Knocking on Heaven's Door". It was really good. No one on stage said anything- they just came on and walked off.

After the show we met up with some people we knew, and 1 guy volentered to take us 1 at a time back to the car on his motercycle from the lot. Let me tell you, this one guy in the lot that was selling avacado sandwhiches to fund his way to the next show was smoking a joint of weed that must have been a foot long. absurd.

turns out the guy who was going to take us back to the car wiped out his bike and we had to walk through the cornfield again to the car, about 2 am.

I have been meaning for over a decade to get the video tape of this show. Supposedly one of the headshops here in town has (had?? don't know if its still even open) most of the dead shows on tape to borrow for free. It'd be fun to revisit that.

I had a few favorites.  Flashdance, just loved to watch Jennifer Beals.  ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man--every guy's dream, and Madonna's Cherish.

That's a great story. I have many stories. I just have a lil trouble remembering some of the deatails. It was a very blury time in my life. I still to this day wonder how my kids made it into this world without 3 arms or 12 fingers. I went to 37 shows. which really isin't much compared to many. I have a DVD of the Alpine Valley shows. I think it was a 3 night gig ? Anyway, you really should get a hold of it if you can. It's one of the better DVD's they have put out.

Scott!

If/when you have the chance- could you pop in that dvd and verify that I am right about dear mr fantasy and knocking on heaven's door- the order. was one the last song, the other the encore, or were they both encore songs?

The sherrifs for the county that this show took place gave up trying to regulate traffic out of alpine valley and went home. it was a free for all. the dead heads one and had the universe they wanted to create free from "the man." I remember seeing this guy crashed in a collapsed 2 man tent in the mud. we started to set it back up, and pretty soon had 8 people involved. Somebody asked "are you sure duuude isn't dead???" I dont recall if anyone checked, but there were no reports of death that weekend.

JD,

No problem. When I get home I will check it out and get back to you. If you are really interested in checking it out, I don't have any problem sending it to you. You can borrow it for a few weeks if you want to? I have a pretty busy schedule Friday through Sunday but I will let you know ASAP on the set list. I have a friend that lives out your way in Madison. She was at those shows aswell. She told me it was a wild time. She had a few stories similar to yours.

know what always got me up out of my seat? Was Jagger doing that kick a$$ weird dance as "Start Me Up" started. And then Keith's big old green face pops up in the camera....that was a video I dug, and still do.

I loved the video for "Mickey" by Toni Basil. I was a cheerleader wanna be when I was younger (about 8 or 9) and loved that video. My mom even went out and bought me and my sister some Crimson Tide pom poms (roll tide!) and we would wait for the video to come on and then shake our pom poms.
My later 80's favorite video was "Save a Prayer" by Duran Duran. It was the live version from their concert and if you watch "Sing Blue Silver" (the movie of their concert tour), the footage was taken from a concert where they dedicated the song to Marvin Gaye, who had just been killed by his father. I loved Marvin Gaye's music and was glad that they paid tribute to him.
I also liked "Land of Confusion", but as I've mentioned before, that video frustrated the heck out of me. They said that it showed Nick Rhodes on there and I watched it a lot trying to find him and never did.
The video I remember the most was "With or Without You" by U2. When we came back from Germany, it was the video they played the most on MTV. We didn't have MTV in Germany and I was glued to the set when we got back. We stayed at my grandparents house for a couple of months while we waited on quarters. I have really good memories of that time. That was definitely the MTV summer of 87! You could call in and vote for your favorite video and watch the video countdown and all the music you loved was on the countdown. It's not like VH1 where I try and find the countdown and when I actually find it and get to see it, most of the music on there just does not appeal to me.
Ahhhh...the good old days! I keep telling myself, I'm not getting old, I'm NOT getting old, I just have discriminating taste, that's why a lot of the new music sounds like garbage. Anyone else out there feel this way?
