RIP George Carlin

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- A publicist for George Carlin says the legendary comedian has died of heart failure at a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif.

Jeff Abraham says Carlin went into St. John's Health Center on Sunday afternoon, complaining of chest pain. Carlin died at 5:55 p.m. PDT. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. It was announced Tuesday that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

The dean of counterculture comedians, Carlin constantly pushed the envelop with his jokes, particularly with a routine called "The Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV."

When Carlin uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace. And when they were played on a New York radio station, they resulted in a Supreme Court ruling in 1978 upholding the government's authority to sanction stations for broadcasting offensive language.

He's going to be missed!! His comedy was so great because it was based on real life and truths; it always made you think about what he was saying.  His death is very sad news to me this morning.  cry

He was my favorite. I'm sad that I never got to meet him, but glad that I did have the opportunity to see him perform a few times. I will miss his mind.

I liked his show in the late 80s or early 90s where he was a cab driver that hung out in a bar. that was funny.

Yeah, he had that little Yorkshire Terrier. It was weird seeing him walking around carrying a little three pound dog.

I've been waiting years for them to put that show out!  Never missed it, and it was cancelled waaay too soon for my liking.

I'm guessing you're right.  I just did a search on You Tube and didn't find any episodes.  That's usually because the network made them pull it.  I'm guessing that means they plan to make money off it somehow.

So, how long before a movie is made about his life story?

If I can find enough files that don't have explicit language, maybe tomorrow I'll play five or six bits off his CD's. I have five of them I think. There's gotta be some clean stuff on there right?

Carlin: The difference between baseball and football
by George Carlin, Special to FOXSports.com

Comedy great George Carlin died Sunday of heart failure at the age of 71. This is a reprint of his classic bit "The Difference Between Baseball and Football." Excerpted from Brain Droppings by George Carlin, Copyright 1997, Comedy Concepts Inc. Published by Hyperion. All rights reserved.

Baseball is different from any other sport, very different. For instance, in most sports you score points or goals; in baseball you score runs. In most sports the ball, or object, is put in play by the offensive team; in baseball the defensive team puts the ball in play, and only the defense is allowed to touch the ball. In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he's out; sometimes unintentionally, he's out.
Also: in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and all sports played with a ball, you score with the ball and in baseball the ball prevents you from scoring.
In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager. And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do. If you'd ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform, you'd know the reason for this custom.

George Carlin knew. Baseball is a walk in the park. Football is war. (E. Pablo Kosmicki / Associated Press)

Now, I've mentioned football. Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.

I enjoy comparing baseball and football:
Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.
Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.
Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.
In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.
Football is concerned with downs what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups who's up?
In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.
In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.
Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.
Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.
Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.
Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.
In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.
And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! I hope I'll be safe at home!

Fuzzy, that was my favorite George Carlin bit...its what helped me convert Riggs to football.

Mz, thanks for the You Tube bit.  I think the thing that made him so effective as a comic was his ability to go counter-cultural.  Many times he was the one to use his comedy to say the emperor wasn't wearing any clothes.  He truly was a wordsmith.

He could also be silly.  One of his characters, Al, the hippy, dippy weather man's forecast...."Tonght's forecast, dark...with wide scatetred dark until morning."  Still makes me laugh.

I remember buying a Carlin album as a kid, and my mom making me return it to the K-Mart I bought it at.

Aw, this is so sad. I grew up on George Carlin - my parents used to listen to him on vinyl and watch him on cable now and again.

I admire his style, his courage to be an independent thinker and express himself freely through his comedy and political commentaries. I have such respect for that.
