Because of high copper prices, it now costs the U.S. Mint 1.3 cents to make a penny and 7.7 cents for a nickel.
It is estimated that there are some 150 billion coins going unused. That's about $90 per house standing in jars and loose in drawers and sofa cushions.
According to the Sustainable Research Group, there would be big environmental benefits if just 10 percent of dormant coins were recirculated.
Water savings at the mint would be equal to about 82 million showers. Energy savings could light 4.1 million bulbs for 1,000 hours each CO2 emissions equal to those from 12,619 cars would be kept out of the atmosphere.

The nice thing about having change around the house now, is that most banks have coin counters. No more rolling the change.

Oh man, I hope I have $90 at my house. Our jar is half full. (Okay, our huge empty vodka jug is half full.)

Give me enough money to save dollars instead, and I will. Until then, pennies, nickels, and dimes will have to do.

Oh, I don't wanna start anything (I mentioned this on the forum once and it nearly started a brawl) but I'd just as soon see us dump the damn penny all together and start rounding to the nearest nickel.

The penny is the most worthless coin in the entire world.

I actually TRY to use exact change when I go out now.

But more and more I'm finding I don't use cash at all. In fact. I pretty much only use cash for purchases under $10 now.

I like not carrying money, AND since I started using MINT I like to let it track ALL of my spending.

Perhaps if people just took them out of their jars and to the bank, the mint wouldn't have to produce so many. I don't understand why they need to mint money every year. What is wrong with using what is out in the market place and every couple of years just replacing the really ugly stuff.

But that penny tax rarely collected a penny at a time.

Miller Park was built with a penny tax too.  But when you go buy something for $50 you're actually paying .50 in a penny tax.  No actual need for the penny.

I say melt em' all down and build a big surrender flag to donate to France.  We still owe em' some kind of thank you for the statue of Liberty don't we?  confused.gif
