The Social Security Thread

When Social Security began in 1935, the average life expectancy at birth was 61 years. The benefits were scheduled to begin at age 65. It doesn't take the smartest kid in the class to figure this one out.

Social Security as of 2004, is the only source of income for 22% of the elderly.

For 1/3 of Americans 65 and older, benefits make up 90% of their income.

Since 1935, payroll taxes have been increased 20 times. In 2005, for every dollar earned in wages up to $90,000, the employee pays 6.2% and the employer pays 6.2%, for a combined total of 12.4% payrol tax for social security.

a 1936 pamphlet promised that 3% is the most you will ever pay for Social Security taxes.

It is projected in 2050 that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid will consume 75% of the federal budget. Hell, these accounted for 45% of the federal budget in 2003, leaving 55% for all other government expenses.

The SSA estimates that if we make no changes in our current system, benefits checks will shrink to approximately 74% of the promised benifits in 2041.
