Just wondering if anyone knows.....

if my employer can legally make me change my job position without me performing my job unsatisfactorily? First off nothing is happening right now. This is just bugging me. Before I started doing data entry I held other positions here including floor shop manager. I jokingly volunteered to switch positions when the data entry position became available. I was taken seriously and I changed. I have no regrets. I was burned out. But I know that they are having troubles keeping one of the mgr positions filled. The latest one will be leaving in a few months. The person they were considering for the position walked off the job last week. She did not know about the consideration. I am worried they will ask me. I also heard through the grapevine that a "family member" is looking for a job and does not want to work on the floor and would like to work in the office. They do whatever they want for family members- my job would be the easiest to target. There is quite a difference in positions and didn't know if they could make me or not?

Unless you have a contract...or are protected by a union...you are an at-will employee.  I am not sure under Michigan law, but I believe they can offer you another position.  Unless there is discrimination or hostile work environment issues...that would be within their power to do so.

At-Will employees are generally free to take the job and leave it at the time of their choosing.  Unfortunately employers can change an employee's job description or let them go at the time of their choosing as well.

Sorry Woo cry

I don think they can make you go Woo. Then can ask and you have the right to refuse. They can not fire you for that. If they were to "offer" you the position, they better make it worth for you. Don't let them threaten you in any way (even subtly). If they make noise, objections or threats, you make it known that you aren't afraid to involve a lawyer.

I kinda thought that too Dylan. I'm not sure what they know though and how far they would actually push. Because I also have family members there. Not sure how many feathers they want to ruffle. I've always wanted to be a fly on the wall the day my husband quit. But we shall see if any of these even comes about. Who knows? I would not ask if I didn't think they were capable of such a thing.

See how they present it to you...if they offer a position change...it is almost like negotiating at your initial hire....maybe you can leverage more money and better vacation etc.  I hope it plays out the way you want...and at this point it is all rumor...I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

thanks Dylan. I don't want the change. So I am hoping it doesn't even come up. If I wanted it then it would be great to negotiate. But a change would mean more stress and no FFR. I would not have a computer. Heck I wouldn't have time to play even if I did have one.
