Virtual Winery Tour

This is a winery in Algoma Wisconsin. Cool building and good wines...

The History of von Stiehl Winery

Listed in the National Historic Registry, and recognized by the Wisconsin Heritage Tourism Program, the winery is housed in a building built around the end of the Civil War. Come experience the bold Austrian architecture. From the underground arched limestone cavers, to the 4th Floor Galleria, there are a multitude of rooms to explore.

The traditional architecture is the perfect setting for von Stiehl traditional wines. The recipes for over 20 grape and fruit wines are culminated in the limestone cellars. Top quality ingredients from local fruit (Door County cherries) to west coast grown grapes (Johannisberg Riesling) are utilized to make these popular medal-winning wines so that everyone from the sophisticated wine connoisseur to the fruit wine enthusiast can find a favorite at von Stiehl.

its actually wisconsin's oldest winery, I just found out....

Wisconsin's oldest winery features tours and tasting from their Bohemian tasting salon. von Stiehl is housed in a 1850's era building that was originally the Ahnapee Brewery. Used as everything from storage to a washing machine factory in the interim, the structure was perfect for Dr. Stiehl's hobby, wine making, when it outgrew his basement. By the time the current owners, Bill & Sandy Schmiling bought the winery, the reputation for excellent wine and unique bottling was already formed. Bill has expanded the product line greatly to include about two dozen wines featuring apples, cherries, plum, raspberry, blueberry as well as dessert wines and non-alcoholic offerings. von Stiehl still "wraps" some bottles in their distinctive white casts, a brainstorm of Dr. Stiehl who wanted to protect his newly made wines from heat and light while it aged. Wrapping the bottles in white casts, much like he would wrap a broken limb in his medical practice, gave von Stiehl wines a very unique look.

The grape wines produced at the winery range from traditional vinifera (origin from Europe) to French hybrid wines (midwestern flavor).

The most cherished wine is our Riesling. Popular for its semi-dry fruity taste, the Riesling is perfect for wine drinkers and non-wine drinkers alike. It has won a myriad of Gold medals thus far, and continues to turn heads and please taste buds for wine judges across the country.

You can also taste von Stiehl's premium quality Cherry Kirsche (fortified with brandy), be ready for a very cherry experience.

I like a Reisling. I also like a nice fruit wine.

I am taking a "mental health day" this Friday. Am headed to a local winery for tasting and buying. They have a very enjoyable raspberry wine. The cherry is nice too, as well as their Reisling. They also have something called "Concord Grape". Although I am not really a grape fan, I have tried it. It is actually like Welch's grape juice with a little kick.

If anyone were interested - www.manatawnycreekwinery.com

Wine on.

Mz you sent up a couple of wines a few years ago, and those are fantastic. I kept one of the empty bottles. it sits on the window sill of my kitchen.

Maybe we can have a wine swap of some sort. That may be interesting. We could plan something for anyone who drinks wine and is interested. Who wants to take the lead? Sorry, I am a follower, not a leader. If I have to, I lead.

What about a wine exchange instead of a gift exchange? I'm sure I can find some service online that would fit our needs. (I don't want to use the same one as we use for Christmas, just so we don't get them mixed up.) I'll take a look and start a new thread with instructions. But, is there anyone other than the 3 of us that would be interested?

I honestly don't know. I guess all we can do is ask. If no one wants to play it is okay. It isn't a strange idea is it?

If it's just the 3 of us, we could each send the other two a bottle of wine. But if there's more than that, it could get expensive, and I think we should do an exchange.

If we do do an exchange, I would say limit it to $15 or less a bottle? I think the ones I would send are anywhere from $8-12 a bottle.

oh sure on the limit. I think the one(s) I'd send out would run about $12 a bottle.

Hey, I'll get in the Great Wine Exchange too....if it's not too late.

We have a little winery by us that opened up a couple of years ago. They make some great wine.

Check 'em out....

I just have to say that all this wine talk yesterday had me in a wine mood. So when I got home last night, there was a nice bottle of Reisling in the fridge. It went nicely with my dinner.
