Croatia Fun Facts

Once part of the Roman, Ottoman and Austrian Habsburg empires, Croatia finally declared its independence from the former Communist state of Yugoslavia in 1991.

dotclear.gif
dotclear.gif Ethnic fighting in the western Balkans (in the 1990s) brought havoc to Croatia; historic cities and towns like (Dubrovnik and Zadar) were devastated; and even temporally abandoned.

dotclear.gif
dotclear.gif Croatia is a beautiful land, with a jagged coastline (the Dalmatian), one dotted with dozens of islands. Inland, the lower mountains and hills of the Dinaric Alps slice through the country.

dotclear.gif
dotclear.gif Happily, Croatia's tourism is on the rebound, as its coastal resorts, Roman ruins, the capital city of Zagreb, and very pleasant weather make it one of the hottest destinations on the continent.

Summer fun in July...Tomato Day!

The smell of tomato salsa spills all over town from four big pots, and few and far between are those who do not enjoy it. Umag, located in the area in which, due  to  its  climatic condition and soil composition, tomato is of quite exceptional quality, celebrates a good tomato harvest with special gusto. This traditional gastro fiesta takes place in the main square (Trg slobode / Liberty Sq.) where  visitors  can  savour  numerous dishes  prepared with  tomatoes and not just any tomatoes, but one of the best varieties in the country.

A Summer Custom...The Sali Fiesta

When ships from Sali sail into the port of Zadar, bringing with them the sounds of "donkey music", it is a sign to all that the Sali Fiesta, popular across the whole of the Adriatic, has begun. Larking  about  through  the  streets  of  Zadar  and  playing  "donkey  music", the merry parade invites everyone to join the three-day celebration in a relaxed atmosphere. The following evening the mouth watering  aromas  of  the  Fishermen's  Night will  make your palate crave for food. It will not be easy to decide what to try first among the many specialties   like   brodettos,   pilchards and  tuna  dishes,  surrounded  by  the mellow atmosphere of Dalmatian night still further enhanced by the melodies of Dalmatian harmony singing groups. Sport-inclined visitors interested in trying new and unusual sports will get into their own on the third day of the Fiesta, which comes to an end with the popular Night of Sali when  entertainment is provided by well known pop stars. The  Fiesta  ends  on Sunday with the traditional Donkey Race, a spectacular event and a barrel of laughs.

Hey JD, I think you would enjoy this one...at the end of the month there's a festival picutre-worthy for your Myspace...

SUMMER WITH THE NEANDERTHALS OF KRAPINA

One  of  the  most  striking  symbols  of Krapina  is  certainly  the  primeval  Neanderthal man of Krapina, the Krapina Neanderthal, a unique source of pride and a witness of Krapina's ancient and rich history. Therefore, a visit to Krapina is not merely a visit to a town, but a visit to a well known archeological locality, one  of  the  cribs  of  humanity  in  this region. In order to highlight the town's values, various programmes organized under  the  common name  of  Summer with the Neanderthals of Krapina take place  during  the  month  of  August in the streets of Krapina. For those who wish  to  attend  the  events  within  the Summer, there is a train departing from Zagreb. After arrival in Krapina, guests may take a sightseeing tour with expert guidance, visit the parish fair on Trki vrh or join the excursion to the nearby hill of Strahinjica. In addition, during the five Sundays in August, topical pro- grammes are organized on Hunjakovo: the Sunday of the Burghers, the Then and the Now, the Sunday of the Krapina Neanderthal, the Ethno Sunday and the Festival Sunday.

The necktie (cravat) originates from Croatia.

"... Around the year 1635, some six thousand soldiers and knights came to Paris to give their support to King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu. Among them were a great number of Croatian mercenaries.

The traditional outfit of these Croats aroused interest on account of the unusual and picturesque scarves distinctively tied about their necks. Later on, during the reign of Louis XIV, the Croatian scarf was accepted in France, above all in court, where military ornaments were much admired. The fashionable expression, a la croate, soon evolved into a new French word, which still exists today: la cravate.

Text_Bullet.gifLADO - Folk dance ensemble of Croatia

 lado.jpg

LADO is an archaic Slavic word, frequently used as a refrain in old ritual songs of the North-West Croatia, and a synonym for the expression meaning "good", "lovable, "dear".

LADO Ensemble of Croatian folk song and dance was founded in Zagreb, in 1949 as a profesional national ensemble.

36 brilliant dancers of the Ensemble, who are also excellent singers, can easily transform the folk dance ensemble into a representative folk choir, while its 15 superb musicians play some forty different instruments.

In its imposing choreographic and musical repertoire, the LADO Ensemble primarily pays homage to original folk art, making it recognizable and well known throughout the world.

With its unique collection of highly valuable authentic national costumes (more than 1000 costumes), each concert of the LADO Ensemble is a kind of fashion show of the original Croatian traditional attire.

When in the review of a LADO's concert one reads that its perfomance tastes of the spring- water, it is perhaps the best description of its character: clear, refreshing and indispensable to life, reflecting on its surface the man and the whole nation and its culture.
