I just got back from the food store where I was practically accosted by a woman unhappy about the cost of cherries.
She runs up to me as soon as I walk into the produce department flailing a bag of cherries in front of my face and exclaims "Look at these! Can you believe these cost $8.50!!! There's nothing in there!
She was right, the bag of cherries was about the size of the box you're get your Quarter Pounder in at McDonalds. She continued to follow me as I walked through produce, telling me how insane it was. When I got to the grapes and picked some up she said "Those aren't cherries, those are grapes! Look here, these are the cherries, and this was a SALE PRICE!"
I just said something about prices being crazy (thinking all along that the prices weren't the only crazy thing in the store today) and took my small bag of grapes to the scale. Price? $7.50
And then this crazy penguin was following everyone around the store saying, ""Look at these grapes! Can you believe these cost $7.50!!! There's nothing in there! "
I'm surprised fruits and veggies are skyrocketing so much.
I would think supply and demand would REALLY affect them.
At a certain price people stop buying them and opt for cheaper canned versions of stuff, or frozen.
And being produce, if it doesn't sell it's wasted. With such a limited shelf life I would think high prices could be a real problem for produce sellers.
When I can, I look at a few things when buying fresh produce. I try to compare Farmer's Market, Bloomingfoods (grocery co-op, which I am a member of and get an additional discount), and Kroger. Because Farmer's Market and Bloomingfoods only stock local in season produce, sometimes I have to go to Kroger for the mediocre shipped in stuff (which I probably shouldn't be buying anyway). And sometimes I have coupons for Kroger or they have something on sale. It used to be that Farmer's Market and Bloomingfoods were more expensive, but now it's evening out. If I'm paying the same price, or even just a couple cents more, I'd rather buy local.
The sad thing is, eating healthy is always more expensive...its like they want us to eat nothing but the Soylent Green that is the processed food of the day.
I have noticed that in the last couple of years produce prices have not fallen the way they used to. Very disappointing. I like cherries and grapes. But if it isn't a great sale, I will not buy them.

It's good to know I'm not the only person who gets approached by the random crazy people out in public. I need to find the switch for that "Hey, come be crazy at me" sign over my head and turn it off.

I hope it doesnt get to the point where the produce costs so much, they have to keep them in glass enclosed, velvet lined cases and credit checks and loans become necessary.
I usually get attacked because peoplr think I work in a store. I can be out shopping for a new outfir and people start asking me questions. I then have to say, "Sorry, but I don't work here." I wonder if I just have a face for retail or something.

Well, I think per pound the grapes here were 3.49 and the cherries were 3.99. But they're such heavy little buggers that pretty much any bag you picked up off the shelf would weigh in at nearly $8 or $9 even though it didn't look like there was that much there.

I get the same thing! Random people asking me where the bathrooms are or does this come in red?
I get the - Excuse me sir are you the manager? When I go into a store while I'm working. Just because I'm in a clown suit doesn't mean I'm gonna do your kids birthday party!

Sometimes, when i'm lonely... i crawl into a laundry basket and tickle my ears. But, Some times I don't...
I just bought some grapes the other day for $.79 a pound...they've been really reasonable here the past few months. Cherries have been expensive though....$3.99 a pound.
Yesterday I went for a ride out in the country to get some sweet corn. Almost every farmer's stand is selling corn for $5.00 a dozen!!! I finally found one that was only charging $4.00 per dozen. Still, that's outrageous for 12 ears of corn! Last year I was getting it for $2.00. When I go back up to the cabin in another week, I'm going to check with the Amish and see how much they're selling corn for.....last year I got it from them for $1.00 a dozen; we'll see how much their price has gone up this year.
Corn prices have been high for the past three years around here. Normal prices seem to be running 6 for $2. A good sale has it 12 for $2. I think a lot of that has to do with the ethanol fuel. Farmers are probably making better money selling to the government, scientists and companies producing the ethanol.
