Briggs 4th quarter net plunges 97%

Briggs & Stratton Corp. (BGG) reported today that fourth-quarter income plummeted 97%, as engine sales sputtered in the weak economy.

The world's largest maker of air-cooled gasoline engines reported a profit of $479,000, or 1 cent a share, compared with $18.1 million, or 36 cents, a year earlier.

They saw it coming.  Massive layoffs are occuring.  My uncle has been with them for something like 25 years and he lost his job.  In fact, I think tomorrow is his last day.

He made really good money and at age 57 he's not sure what the heck he's going to do.

On the positive side though. The oil companies posted their biggest profits ever, AGAIN.

So if you work for BP/Amoco you're doin' alright these days.
