It works best if I memorize it, but I still have a lead sheet handy just in case.

Memorizing songs is tough for me to do. I do find its getting easier as my ear training gets better, but I have to play a song MANY times before I can start to memorize it well.

Web, it help if you break a song down into its components....verse, chorus, bridge, instrumental, intro etc.
